Cool Tiger I Late, #213, sPzAbt 509

Hi Everyone,

after being extremely busy at work in the last 4-5 Months, it looks as if I may get some bench time during the summer months I want to take a pause from my long going sdkfz 250/7 build. So after consolidating my ever growing stash, it's time for a.... Tiger

I will use the DML 6253, Tiger I Late Production kit. I am building Tiger #213 of sPzAbt 509 fighting in Novoselki, Belarus on the 23rd of June 1944. The 509 received a full batch of brand new Tigers end of May 1944 and were attached to Army Group Centre when the Soviets launched Operation Bagration. #213 was commanded by Oblt. Richard Wagner.

Apart from DML 6253, I am using AFV Clubs workable tiger tracks:

And Part's PE set for the Tiger Late:

So here we go, starting with the hull and the workable suspension:

And then assembling and cleaning the road wheels:

Next thing, the tracks. I knew from PMMS that they need some cleanup, but that was a bit of an understatement. Flash and pin marks on every link

At least it will keep me busy for a while

more to come...

I look forward to seeing your progress Amba, looks like your off to a great start. These Dragon Tigers are great kits, in fact I just opened up a Cyberhobby Kompanie Fehrmann kit myself...
Nice choice for unit too, 509 is rather unrepresented in the 1/35 world...

That looks painful with all that cleanup. Job well done.

when I look at these tracks I feel like going back to modelling planes !
No wheels, no tracks !

You seem to be very courageous using these AFV tracks !

Hey Guys, thanks for all the comments and yes, the tracks really need a lot of cleanup But I hope in the end it's worth it.... I wanted workable tracks because I want to keep the suspension and the tracks working. I think the AFV tracks were the best and the cheapest solution, despite all the work you have to put into them.

I managed to complete one side of the tracks and did a test run with everyhing on:

And they do work not only the suspension you can actually roll the tank around on the workbench

Now all I have to do is to complete the other side

I took a short break cause I got so bored and built the exhausts with some additional details from Part:

The exhaust covers from DML which are preshaped are actually pretty nice. I removed the nuts and drilled holes instead, because I will use some Calibre 35 nuts. And also danged them up a bit so that they look a bit more used. Not too much though, because this tank had only been in service for 1 month and this was their first combat mission:

I will be skiing for the next couple of days and wish you all a happy easter

Looking forward to seeing more Amba. As said, 509's a good and different subject.
Great job on the tracks, first time I've seen them that close up. A lot of clean up but we can't complain on the price.
I'm also interested in seeing how the 'Part' etch is, I've never used it before.

Gotta ask if you make the engine noise like we did when we were kids doing this!

I'd say it was worth it but I didn't do the work, I know I would be proud.

Hi Grant, and welcome to PlanetArmor. The tracks are really great once completed and there is no way they will fall apart. Part's etch is just great. I would rate their newer set's second to Aber's if not equal and lightyears ahead of Eduard.
