Wiesel MK20A1 in Afghanistan

I actually purchased this kit at the IPMS show in Austin and immediately got to work on it...
I couldn't resist it, its so CUTE! (yes i called a weapon of war cute. deal with it.)

Ok, started out with the top deck. the side vent had to be filled, it was wide open...

also that top grate is terrible!
it needs to go!

if you look at this reference you can see that the grate is actually a thick steel grate. the photoetch sets though have this as a flat piece that also looks bad...

so i hacked it out! and started cutting some evergreen to make my own grill. looks a bit off here but i fixed it:

here is is pretty much done (well the grate)

I built a box on the inside so that i could install a photoetch screen under the grate, and then a blackened base to close it off

if you look closely you can see the screen, i am about to close it off with the cap

closed off:

in person its easier to see the depth that this provides:

I have matted the top with the hull. the hull was put together based on the instructions.

side view, with the side grate.

the side grate made me decide i don't want to deal with slat armor... it was put together like stryker slat armour, and was frustrating to say the least!

as a word of warning to anyone wanting to do this kit:
the hull piece has some nasty sink marks and fit issues... tred carefully and test fit!
I had to re-build the part just under the side vent, a it was warped. ill get closer pics later

the dirve sprocket is so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuute

uses photo etch for the teeth sandwiched between some plastic bits. take your time and its not a problem! make sure its all right before you super glue though! if you mess up it could be impossible to fix without ripping the photo etch or bending it!

Yeah! I'm not the only one (even though, I call tanks cute) I like the Wiesel, I didn't realise it is this small...
