King Tiger Porsche Turret - Tamiya 1:48

The other nice little model Santa brought. I got more into working on this while waiting for decals to dry on my T-34.

Prepping for zimmerit. I like to get this out of the way while I can still handle all of the parts separately. Like with my Brumbaer, I like to start the zim on one model while I'm still building another - that way I have another project to work on while all the epoxy is drying.

Roughed-in zimmerit. I discovered at some point during this process that I work much better troweling completely across the workpiece first and then going back for the vertical cuts. Also, I don't do well following my measurments - I guess I'm more of an eyeballer. The more even zimmerit application was where I just went for it without the masking tape-tick marks applied. Good I'm learning about this, 'cause I owe my son a zimmerit job on his 1:35 King Tiger. . .

Zimmerit cleaned up and a small amount of initial assembly and painting.

Overall, this is going together pretty well. I did have some fit issues with the upper and lower hull at the forward end. The plastic and die-cast parts didn't want to properly mate-up - there was a very un-Tamiya-like gap. I checked for excess epoxy and even after cleaning every possible extra bit, the fit was still bad. I ended up fitting a filler piece made from sheet styrene, glued to the lower hull.

Thanks for checking in. . .

Thanks Flak! I'm going to try to learn a few things on this one, particularly with replicating weld beads. The upper parts of the turret and the upper hull cry out for a little detailing in that regard.

I did most of a zimmerit job last night on my son's 1:35 Tamiya Tiger II/Production Turret model and then did a bit of assembly work on my turret and gun. Got the wheels assembled, trimmed and sanded this morning. I'll have more pics in the next few days.

The tracks ready for paint (left). The tracks with a first coat of Metallic Gray. An annoying thing I found out about this kit is that both sets of tracks are identical, meaning one side will end up reversed. . .

Plastruct strip applied to the turret, ready to be "welded".

A wider shot of the model and a shot of the tool I made to create the look of weld seams. The music wire has a round chisel tip for indenting the melted plastic. I used Plastruct's "Bondene" to attach the strips and then to soften them once they were bonded to the model.

Thanks! I was puzzling over what to do for some grille covers. I haven't found a PE kit for it and was thinking about making them myself from some fine screen.

I spoke too soon. I just visited track48.com and ordered grilles for this one.

Also picked up Fenders, PE Set, and barrel for my (1:48) Stug III G. and PE Set and barrel for my (1:48) Jagdpanther.

Great job on the zimmerit. Looks perfectly thin for the scale. The rendering of the weld beads are also very nice.

Keep it up!
