Thumbs up My first tank, ever...Tiger 1 Early Production Tamiya 1/48

Well, this is my first armor model. I'm not new to modeling. I've been building airplanes for the past 3 years or so and I got the urge to build a few targets, err tanks.

Wow, what a refreshing change. I almost had the whole thing put together in one afternoon.

Not to exciting but it sure looks cool! As you can see I didn't add the tracks. The are in sections not individual links so I hope I can pull off weathering them and adding them at the final step.

Question: In my AC builds I usually prime with mr surfacer 1200. Then I typically preshade. I've noticed many of you will prime with black paint. I'm thinking of doing that because the whole point of this build is to try something new. Any suggestions?

Here are some examples of previous work in case anyone was interested.

Nice clean start on the Tiger Isaac! Nice planes too I suppose.

I prime anything I am going to paint dark gray with black, it's a primer and pre-shade all in one.

Hello Isaac,

Welcome to PA..I had the same experience, built aircraft for years and just ran out of steam. after picking up an armor kit I have not had so much fun building in years....and also pushing the boundaries on trying new techniques and ideas.

PA has lots of superb builders who are willing, ready and eager to share information and provide help.

For primer I use either a Krylon black or grey (from the local store).

I have used Mr. Surfacer and that is good too.

I use the MIG pigments and either oils or acrylics for weathering .

Check out some of the V benches...tere are some spectacular builds.

Your Tiger looks cool...

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention that I have chosen a desert scheme. I'm a bit nervous using a black primer for dark yellow but I've looked at Sergionex's work and well, you can't argue with that!

No you can't. His work is about as good as it gets.

Question: are the roadwheels, sprockets and idler glued in place?

No, they are not glued in place. In fact, I removed them to prep them for paint.

I painted the main chassis in Tamiya flat black. I didn't go for 100% coverage as this is just a preshade and pseudo primer. I'm thinking I should have given it a light spray of Mr Surfacer prior to the flat black. Oh well, I'll know for next time. Maybe some Citadel Chaos black?

As you can see all the drive wheels are absent as I couldn't find a suitable way of holding them for painted with the materials I have on hand.

Looking at the barrel, I need to do some more clean up. I joined the two halves with tamiya extra thin and got the dreaded shrinkage. I filled with mr surfacer 500 and sanded smooth but it is not perfect. I'll have to correct that.

Oh and I apologize for the poor photos. I moved my little light box from one room to the other and one of the lights became a casualty of war. Hence, the use of the harsh flash.
