I was looking forward to this Leo on steriods but looks like Hobby Boss dropped the ball on this one. Their 1/48 T-34s were good and I was expecting better stuff from them (also since they are part of Trumpeter).

Thanks for the review Rod

No worries Lawrence, I think everyone was expecting better but hopefully they'll pick things up in the future.

Interesting choice of subject for them to go for, just a shame having gone to all the effort and expense of new moulds they didn't do a better job on the details. Look forward to seeing it built up.

Alright finally got the bench clear so I can start on this. I will be taking one of these:

And one of these:

And hopfully ending up with something that looks like a Swedish Leo2

After pulling everything out of the boxes and studying the instructions, photo's etc. I decided to start with the turret. The Tamiya turret baseplate has much nicer detail:

As you can see has the base of the German style stowage boxes molded in (the longer part), but it is a very simple matter to remove it with the razor saw. This then fits snugly to the Hobbyboss Strv. turret.

The detail on this kit is really shocking:

Apparently the strip running down the side of the turret is a welded seam, yup.....
I also noticed the GPS (Gunner's Primary Sight) was missing some detail so I removed it and carefully cut out and added the one from the tamiya turret and plugged it with some Mr White Putty (just noticed it needs a little bit of a clean up too);

The Hobbyboss peri-17 is a LUMP of plastic so once again the tamiya one is used

Once again the tamiya parts have for main gun and armour have better detail. Which brings us to here:

This is my first shot at a kit-bash, so bear with me as I bumble along. Fortunately this hasn't been to difficult so far

Thanks for looking, Rodders

Good progress on this dog of a kit

Shame that you have to "burn" a good kit to bring the Trumpeter kit up to speed.

Great job thus far. Will keep my eye on your progress. Although I do not have any particular interest in this kit (Hobby Boss) I do think the Leo is a cool looking machine.

Cheers guys
Roy, don't worry no one should have any interest in this kit.
Lawrence, it's kinda even worse cause the HB kit cost me more (4200yen vs 3600 for the tamiya )
Anyway, finished the turret:

And moved onto the hull. As this shot:

Shows, all that needs to be done to the hull is to cut out rear left corner to fit the new APU hull corner and remove the mud flaps. I managed to cut too much on the APU corner, but some white putty fixed things up, just needs a bit of a sand and she'll be right as rain.

So after adding the new frontal armor as well we're at here:

This is actually going a lot quicker than I expected so I should be finished building tomorrow, hoorah!

Thanks for looking
Rodders
