Company of Heroes

Hey all,
I watched the movie "Company of Heroes" last night. An OK flick...certainly "hollywood", but a fun war movie in the spirit of movie's like The Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heroes.
One point of interest though is the German tanks used in the movie. They appear to be T-34s but the hulls have been retro-fitted with some strange appliques front and rear. Anyone ever seen an historical basis for these modifications or is it purely Hollywood? I considered that maybe the Nazis did something similar with captured T-34s as they did to produce the Ersatz Panthers?
