Heard a lot of nice things about The Deep Blue Ocean, but I haven't seen it yet.

Tora, Tora, Tora remains my favorite war flick. I wish they'd give it a redo the way Peter Jackson is doing with Dambusters.

I think the tank in the Defiance vidcaps above might be an FV432 made up to look like a Pz.III. I could be wrong though.

One of the reenacting groups that was at the Reading (PA) WW2 weekend last year has an FV432 made up to look like a Stug.III, and it REALLY looks the part at first or second glance, then you start to notice that the road wheels are a little too big and it dawns on you that maybe it's not what you first thought it was...

And now, back to the movies:

Kelly's Heroes is definitely a must-see classic. Probably my all-time favorite is Full Metal Jacket though.
A couple other good ones in no particular order:

Apocalypse Now...can you ever hear Wagner without thinking of Huey gunships blowing (stuff) up???

The Beast, about the tense interactions of a Soviet tank crew lost in Afghanistan

84 Charlie Mopic, another great Vietnam film about a combat cameraman

going waaaay back into the archives, how about Dawn Patrol or Hell's Angels?

Previously mentioned, and seconded here too are Black Hawk Down, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Dirty Dozen too. No one mentioned Enemy at the Gates, that was decent, the sets were amazing.

It's more sci-fi than war, but I always thoroughly enjoy The Final Countdown where the Nimitz is transported back to Dec. 6, 1941...Tomcats vs. Zero's oh my!

Not necessarily "war" movies in the traditional sense, but if Kelly's Heroes and the Dirty Dozen are in the mix, these fit too:

Top Secret with a young and not-yet-full-of-himself Val Kilmer

Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux...great spoofs of every war movie ever...

Buffalo Soldiers, a dark comedy that takes place at an Army base in Germany as the Wall is coming down between East and West

Stripes with Bill Murray (still waiting for someone to do an EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle!)

Finally, how about 1941 with Jim Belushi and at least a dozen other comic geniuses, all directed by Steven Spielberg?!

Absolute WORST war movie ever has got to Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck...so, so many things wrong with that I don't know where to begin...

So what didn't you like about Pearl Harbor? Other than it being a love story set during the attack on the island. Just curious and I'm not starting an argument or defense of the movie, just interested. It was the only film I could get my wife to sit down and watch.

Heck, even Battle of the Bulge had it's inaccuracies but was still entertaining. Pretty good for it's time and the big name cast they assembled.
