Help - Hatch Cages M4A3

So, I know that Hard Corps Models at one time did USMC 4th TB hatch cages for the M4A3s at Iwo Jima in '45. These don't seem to be in production, and I've been trying different methods to try to make my own. Mainly two main tries:

Fine wire, but soldering is impossible due to heat issues with such a fine and closely spaced cage.

The other has been with plastic rod, but I can't seem to get a good joint that keeps the circles for the hatches I need.

Anyone have any tips from successful cage construction, or do I just need to keep working my techniques?
