PzIII, missing unit and location.

Hello folks.

Any idea what unit and where and when? Looks like Lehr.. but lehr in eastern front winter 42-43?? Panzer Lehr unit started life in France 1943 and as far as I know didn't find it's way to Eastern frount until late 1944. Any help would be wellcome.

Well, It sure looks like a Lehr vehicle. I was under the impression that Panzer Lehr was never in Russia. Formed in France, then fought in Normandy, Was transfered east to participate in Wacht am Rhein, then fought across Germany and surrendered in the Ruhr Pocket. The Winterketten were intoduced in '42, so This has to be after that, which isn't much help. If I had to guess, based upon my limited knowledge of Panzer Lehr, this photo was taken during Wacht am Rhein.

Fletch, Wacht am Rhein was the codename for the Ardennes offensive.

I know. It sounds more impressive than "ardennes offencive" and "the battle of the bulge" sounds so, so American.

Hmm. Thanks guys for intrest. I have to disagree WaR/BoB theory. Haven't seen much winterketten used any other time than during winter 42/43. Not much 43/44 or later. Later came ostketten and those were used as allseason tracks. "L" sure look like lehr but could be something else, some panzer regiments got Lehr-battalions or companies. On rearplate RHS theres something that can be unit marking or just something else.

Cheers Mikko

Well, then it probably is an Ostfront Lehr vehicle attached to some other Pz Army.
