Has the disk failed completely?

Even though that disk may not be bootable the modelling information may be available still.
What was the exact issue?

Don't stress Plushy, I'm sure something can be done.

It happends to everyone if we wait long enough. Hard-drives crash. Period. We just don't know when.

My own hard-drive crash a couple of years back finally got me to start taking regular backups at home as well as at work. And I've been in the computer-business since the early 1990's...

In the crash I did lose some original digital pics. I wasn't too amused I must say... Now I have two hard-drives. One "normal" drive, and one for backups only. From the backup-drive I move stuff onto DVD's. These drives too will crash someday, but hardly on the very same moment. I hope...

Thanks for the offers of help guys .
I have tried a couple of programs to recover the lost images but they could only save a few most of them were corrupted . I have managed to save on partition from the first hard drive and managed to save the second hard drive without any problems . From what i can work out the User profile became corrupted and then a Hive file also died so during the recovery, xp deleted all the user information then rebooted and none of the programs i have tried { Photo Rescue 3 ,Undeleteoneclick and Virtual lab client } have managed to save anything that hasnt been corrupted . All the programs i use came through unscathed so it wasnt a total loss its just annoying that the user information got killed ,in some respects i would have found it easier to lose the programs .

sounds like the mbr of the hdd has gone ... i had that one time and a friend of mine (sw developer) recovered everything with a linux of his choice ... i know some things about the scourge of modern civilization aka computer but not enough to be of any practical help ... maybe someone more fond of mbr recovery could help you?
