They were slits for the blackout driving system. From a far distance, you'd see a single set of 'V' lights. At a normal distance, you'd see 2 sets of Vs. If you were too close, you'd see 4 Vs.

Can I make a suggestion? Don't include that fuel drum on the engine deck. If it were full, it would weigh in excess of 600 pounds. If it weren't full, why would the crew have it?

The best I could do was base the dimensions off of three photos I have of a US6 U13 dumpster. It was the "eyeball" method -- comparing it with known dimensions such as the wheel diameter.
