Recently, I have received a number of requests for information on Amtracs used at the battle of Tarawa. I am sure a lot of this interest has been generated by the upcoming release of the TRAKZ LVT1 full kit and the LVT1 Assault update for the TRAKZ kit.
Last year I was able to locate approx. 3 minutes of color movie film shot on Tarawa just after the battle (about 48 hrs after). The main subject of the film was damage to LVT1 and LVT2 Amtracs during the battle. I have discussed the color of these vehicles with many veterans of the battle. Some vets even sent me color chips showing their recollections of the original fresh color and the faded appearence of the color which happened very quickly.
Now with this color movie footage for comparison, I think that we have settled the matter. I am currently working on some TARAWA LVT1 dry transfers for hardcorpsmodels.com as well as markings for the upcoming TRAKZ WTCT-6 Amphibious Trailer (the version used in the Pacific by the USMC).
The color plate above shows the LVT1 Assault Version "MY DE LORIS" as she would of appeared at Tarawa.
