This on I bought yesterday just to see if DML has improved their 72-scale family. Of course, favourable reviews helped in my decision. I want to paint this in early 3-tone camo, pics anyone? There is lot of decals in kit but according to instructions none are used!!!

http://www.kolumbus.fi/niko.asposalo/T-34/1_front.jpg

AS this was going to be quite OOB experience I started with front. Pieces go together quite well if you manage to keep all parts in box. I didn't with one front towing part which flew into void or something  First glued MG station which had a tricky positioning but box art to the rescue :) Front plate went in place easily.

I wanted to use PE screen for intake so some very crude interior must be built.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/niko.asposalo/T-34/1_reference.jpg
Luckily Aber provides some good reference in 1/35 scale so this was easy.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/niko.asposalo/T-34/1_rearplate.jpg
Rear plate is missing a hatch! So one has to be scribed. I'm not sure if it had to be round or square so I decided to scribe a square one.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/niko.asposalo/T-34/1_scribing%20templates.jpg
Some scribing templates has found their way to my tool box so finding a right one wasn't too difficult.
http://www.kolumbus.fi/niko.asposalo/T-34/1_scribing.jpg
Plate secured to table with Tamiya tape and needle ready to do the job. Luckily those chubby fingers wasn't in the way
http://www.kolumbus.fi/niko.asposalo/T-34/1_scribing%20(1).jpg
Scribing was done in sections as there were no big enough template to do it one time.

Scribing done. It is not totally perfect but good enough for me. Sorry about the poor photo quality.

More of this later,

AS this is ootb, I'm now at this phase:

Base green was a mix of Tamiya Yellow, Olive Drab and some other green. 50% was yellow so it came out quite light. Two filters later things are not looking very good as nothing seems to happened :( Have to keep adding those layers, maybe even some blue ones ;)

Niko,

I like you green in the lower shots.

Here's mine, but I don't know about my interpretation of "Russian"
green, I'm still playing:

If it isn't too late you may want to add weld seems on the turret:
oops, nevermind I just re-read that this is OOB...

And here is a good overall pic, your hatch looks very good, glad
you picked rectangular shape :)

Christopher,
thanks for replying :) Yes, I noticed also weld seams in turret. Next ones will get a full treatment ;)
Your T-34 looks very nice. I see you have replaced head lights. What I am most concerned are tracks. How did you proceed with them? First painted and put in place or vice versa?

Niko,

Yeah I used MV products for the headlights.

As for the tracks...oy. Worst part of the kit. Mine were in pretty bad shape, they had a couple kinks in them, but I put those on the inside.

Anyway, I primed the tracks with Mr. Surfacer 1000 first (though hairspray will work) and then painted them. After that I put them on the model and then weathered everything at that time.

Good luck with the tracks on this one, I hope yours are better than mine were.

Cheers,
Christopher

Thanks for the tips.
Those head lights really make a difference. I have to do something similar in my next build.
My tracks look to be straight. I try to settle with them. Surfacer sounds good choice.

Niko,

I found that all vinyl tracks need to be primed before painting, and Mr. Surfacer is good for this. I've never had trouble with paint adhesion once I started using Mr. S.

Now, the new DS tracks do not have to be primed. These are the orange ones that come is all the new Dragon kits. Totally different material that takes paint and regular glue quite well.

Cheers,
Christopher

I have to get a can of spray Surfacer as normal is too thick. You'll see soon enough the results :)

Duh,
I was trying to finish this one. I primed tracks with Mr. Surfacer 1000 spray can. After that I painted them with MM Enamel Black-Grey which was a BAD mistake, naturally. I should have used acrylics but I thought priming was enough. Well, it wasn't and now the tracks are drying forever :(
Have to check if there is anything to be done with this beast...

Live and learn,

Niko
