View Full Version : Tiger II

I'm building a DML and a Tamiya Tiger II right now, The DML is the new incorrectly named Porsche turret version. I had put some zimmerite using regular Milliput and I was not happy with the results so I sanded it off and redid it using a two part zimmerit putty I got a few years ago from RJ Enteprises. I used the rake piece that comes with the Cavalier zimm set I'm using for the Tamiya Henschel turret version. It's small but it works and I'm really much happier with the result this time using this putty and rake. Using a rake and the Tamiya tool like in the recent Military In Miniature Tiger specail is from what I've read not strictly technically correct. Rakes weren't used in real life on the real tank- each crevice was pushed into the zimmerite paste to create the pattern. However- in the scale model wrld it seems to look okay and its easy so for this build I will use the rake technique. Here are som pics of the veriouys versions and processes. The last pic is of a scratch built snorkel device that was on the very early versions of the Porshe turret . It may not be perfect but I'm happy with it. http://members.shaw.ca/panzerIV/Gifs/fritz.gif

The first attempt with the regular Milliput- it's too thick in my view and too round and puffy lookin'...

new zimmerit :) I used the Caveleir zimm as a reference in look and depth/shapes ect. It cam out pretty close.

Yep-2-part-its quite nice . its not as sticky as Milliput-put sticks fine to the plastic-spreads out nice and is workable with water.

making some progress with the DML Porsche turret Tiger, here's a pic with the dunkelgelb fäber applied...
first the turret- I have added the side shell discard opening with it welded shut and redid the pistol port as I had sanded it off with the zimmerit redo..
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/gelbsidelturret.jpg
and the hull...
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/topbackhull.jpg ....still things to attach but I needed to get my bearings and painting sometimes helps...
the rear exhaust on this very early model needed to be scratchbuilt ... first part

http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/startexhaust.jpg

and then the finished bit (not perfect but I'm happy with it...
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/exhaustfini.jpg

and the beginnings of the metal skirt that goes around the exhaust.
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/metal.jpg

the rust colours are priliminary and will be added to. the Tiger II I'm making is one of the five that was with the 1./Panzerabteilung 302 (FkL)

Number 13
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/fkl316_n_13_abandonned_by_crew_chateaudun_17_08_44 .jpg

According with the inventory of the Panzerlehrdivision the 1th june 1944,
("Zustandsbericht"), six Tiger II assigned to this unit (FKL 316) and three Tigers I, sixteen goliath and undetermined number of B IV.

So...Colonel Ritgen (II/Panzer-Lehr-Rgt.130.) and Jean Claude Perrigault "La Panzer-Lehr-division" Editions HEIMDAL, 1995 think only five Tigers II are deleted to this inventory and crews assigned the 1./Panzerabteilung 302 (FkL) the 15 july 1944, Tigers must be come back to German factory for destruction.

:o Holy cow James. That's gona be one sweet Tiger II man.

I hope you have one of those photoetch bending tools, looks like that would be a pain without it.

Was it raining up there? Looks like water on your lens in the last shot...

Cheers,

Well thanks but it's not done yet... ;)

Yep... got the Hold and Fold and the Etchmate one as well...the Etchmate is better for holdin' and foldin' but I use the Hold & Fold for holding small parts to file off the nub of the metal attachment point.

yea don't know what that was - noticed it when I posted- maybe some dust- it was taken inside... :)
Got the day off so I pushed ahead with the other sides rear fender and did some work weathering and painting... getting the wheels done too and beginning to look at the tracks...
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/lbf2.jpg
this vehicle had the five piece early tracks and the eighteen tooth drive wheel.

First of several updates for today.
I was able to get the tracks primed out and coated with a chemical solution to make rust... this allowed to dry and then excess was brushed off using an old toothbrush- thenn earth colours and dust colours was airbrushed on, A sanding sponge was used to expose the bare metal off the high points on the tracks , simulating the wear that would show on tracks used on roads..
mit der wet solution...
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/tracksi.jpg

http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/tracksii.jpg

starting to dry out with the rust effect beginning to be evident...
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/tracksiii.jpg
pretty much dried up...

here is a loose dry fit of the main parts just to get some idea of how things are going..
http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/fiti.jpg
the paint process I usually do is to preshade and prime with flat black- and then use the base colour- this is coated with Future. Next an oil wash and wipe back followed by an airbrushing of matt clear. On top of this goes the dry brush colour, (same as base colour).
Here is the mixture in artists oil that will be drybrushed on the oil wash Tiger to bring out the detail...

http://members.shaw.ca/achtungpanzer/Planetarmor/project%20folder/oilpaintdrybrush.jpg

here is the tank drybrushed- its a sutle effect..(in the back you can see some off the wheels with the steel effect applied.)

here is a visual diary of the process I do to get the shiny polished metal look to the steel wheels. The area gets buffed on the real thing due to metal to metal contact. I use a drill(battery) to help get an even sanding and painting...the final pics shows some completed wheels including the idler wheel.

starting off with a sanding sponge to get a rough smoothness and to remove the layes of paint from the previous processes.. this is followed by a piece of finer grit 3M sanding spnoge then steel wool and finely with a 3M scouring pad- then the paint is applied followed by a blow dry and then the polishing.

here the wheels are finally on ...whew!... what a process.. the metal drive wheels have been painted the same as the others and the spoke tips scraped back to reveal the shiny metal...

here I am making a stencil to paint the number 13 on the side of the turret...- I used the colour plate in Tigers in Combat book from J.J. Fedorowich making an enlagement to match the the length of the turret scale drawing in the Achtung Panzer book on the Tiger II. I then traced onto a piece of frisket paper the numeral and cut it out with a sharp new xacto knife- ..

and then applied to side of turret and then sprayed with white...

Tracks look really great James, I wish 1/72 had something like that.

Do you know if the rust stuff you have is for metal only? Would it work on plastic or primed vinyl?

Also, got myself a solid graphite pencil from an artist buddy of mine for hitting the high spots on my tracks. Hopefully this will work. Graphite is nice and soft and subtle too, where silver is too bright in 1/72.

Cheers,
Christopher

Awsome work as usual James!!! And I love watching this stuff in progress...

Question.. on the Zim.. I'm trying putty for the first time.. I'm using R&J.. I love how it's water soluble, easy to keep the tools clean..

Only thing is it's pretty hard.. makes it hard to get thin.. my stuff is 5 or 6 years old (bought it when I got back in the hobby - but was too chicken to try it till now)...

Does this stuff age? Did yours seem hard? I'm just wondering if my problem is I need a new batch.. and if so, and this stuff can become soft.. I would love it!

Again.. awsome work.. I like this better than the BLOGS.. cause the pictures are bigger, and there's interaction with your fans!!!
