Hi guys,

now that the "Bow down" project cam e to a close, it's time for a new project.
This time the theme is "Stalingrad"

I choose to depict a SIG33 on the PzIII undercariage to be the main subject.

I planned it drivingthrough a factory hall in Stalingrad, 1942.
There it gets its Baptism of Fire by Ivan, who is trying to throw a molotov-cocktail on the engine deck.

Anyways, here are the pic":

These are the contents for the SIG33 on the PzIII undercariage.

Still got a long way to go.

 WTF? W00000T??? stalingrad? s.IG.33 auf Pz.III? :yell:

you know that you just killed my contribution to the SPG group build, do you?

what a coincidence! :D

your start is absolutely phantastic and extremely promising! both, your factory and your model will be a comparison between eredivisie and hoofdklasse next to mine ... godverdomme!

you dutch people always make it look so easy to construct dio buildings and i am so lame in dioramas, the scenery i have almost finished was hard work and sometimes really painful - again: lovely, absolutely lovely factory!

Hi Planeteers,

sorry for the late reaction, but I've been busy whit all sorts of things lately.

Laura, Soory 'bout that. But do yourself a favour, and build it anyways, maybe we can learn from eachother. That's what this v-bench is about, right?
As for the speed of building, once you have the idea and materials, things sometimes happen really fast.

Johannes- thanx mate, an update will follow soon.

Marco- thanx, patience my friend, I'm working on the update.

Paul- Thanx, why don't pull it out? As I mentioned to Laura, maybe we can learn from eachother.

As I mentioned, updates will soon follow.

Hi Planeteers,

here's another update on the Baptism project.
After some basic detailing, it's time for more details.
I must add that I did some detailing in a crude way. It's a Russian factory right??

I am still looking for some stuff to put in the factory hall.
Sofar I have obtained: a drilling machine, a blow-torch, the rear engine hatch of a T-34 (the big one)and the basic metalbeams and parts lying around.
Sugestions anybody?

Anyway, the pics:

Rick-Thanx, the layout was kind of a challenge, but it turned out quitte well.

Andrey-
Marco-Thanx guys, I'll keep you posted.

I doing some minor detailing now and makeing it ready for the primerjob.
I'think that I will finish the dio first, and concentrate on the vehicle later.

What do you guys normaly do?

i did it this way and i will do it that way whenever i do a dio again!

concerning the siG.33 that's a good idea anyway - this kit needs a lot of attention and if you can focus on the vehicle exclusively it will benefit!

What do you guys normaly do?

For me it depends upon how intergrated they will be - it they are tied together then the need to go hand-n-hand.

Lately, however, I seem to build the vehicle with no clue about a scene and worry about it later.

Hi guys,

time for another update on the Baptism project.

Rick and Laura- thanx for your opinions.
I think I'll do the SiG33 later, and as rick put it, blend them in together in the finishing stage.

As for now.
The construction proces is done, and it was time for basic spray-work.
The wall recieved a solid coat off brick red, and after that dried out, I started to paint individual bricks i a different tint.
Not all bricks have the same colour, right?

The steel construction recieved two shades of gray, and is awaiting weathering and rusting.
The concrete flooring is not done yet, and awaits washes and filters.

I also finished the construction of the figures, and gave them a nice primegreyish colour.
The vehicle commander isn't finished yet, but he will be soon.

"Enough of the bullsh*t allready, pics we want."

Anyways, here are the pics

Hi guys,

Rick -The material I used for the corrugated iron was a sheet of corrugated copper plating, which I bought at a local architects supplystore.
Great stuff.

Marco- Thanx mate, did it with the hairspray thechnique.

Still working on the weathering off the factory.
I'm having some trouble with the rust effects on the steel structure, I just can't get it right.
Suggestions anyone???

Great job Axel, only one thing I would mention and that is the two large caliber hits on your silo. Something that big would do alot of damage coming out the other side and impacting the brick wall behind it. Yet the wall behind it is damage free. Other than that it is really amazing. I love the figs too.

Roy- Thanx- entirely forgot about the lower hole, you're right.
I'll have to fix that one.

Philip- Thanx.

Slow progrress, but we're getting there.

I did the rusting on the steel structure, as well as the weathering of the wall section.
So far, so good.
I found the rusting very dificult to do, and I'm not entirely satisfied, tips anyone?

Axel, After15 minutes of drooling looking at your work I can only say: WOW!
It's incredible the ammount of detail that you are adding to this building.

Having said that I only have two things to point out. First, the corrugated sheets of the roof should overlap one another not only top to bottom but side by side too. (Can't say you didn't do it by the photos alone but I saw some places where they aren't overlaping by the sides.) But, knowing that they are copper I'd leave them glued anyway 'cause they may be destroyed in the removal process. (And they really look good as they are anyway.)

Second, concerning the rust of the steel I'd keep it to a minimum. Remember that all that steel was painted and they are on the interior of the structure so the effect of the weather on that would be minimal.

I think that a good reference source would be the tractor factory in the "Enemy at the Gates" movie.

Hope this helps and keep up that incredible work of yours.

I like the details (objects) that will give your diorama a lived in feeling. How did you make the 55 gal. oil drums? are they sheet plastic or kit parts?

I would like to make an observation... Keep the painting in scale, love the plates, drill press, and the other objects, but the drum with the scrap metal, I think the texture on the drum is a bit too big.

My Bride looked over my shoulder while I was typing this, she thought it was real. Very good job, but, the brick on the ground doesn't look the same color as what's in the wall, also they are very clean, shouldn't there be some mortar still on the bricks that are blown out? Maybe some chunks where the bricks are still mortared to eachother.

Bob- Thanx, I'm glad that you and your wife like my work.
As for the mortar, I'm working on that.

Arthur-Thanx, the pedestral drill is from plus models, a good set.

Now here's the update:
I did some spraying last night, and filters this morning.
This where I am now.
Still have to do the mortar on the bricks, the dust and highlights.
So I'll save that for the next post.

Using the plastic that you did for the silo really scales the effects of the holes. The attention to detail like where the bullets don't penetrate the reinforcement bands but does the silo, who would have thought of that...well I wouldn't...And the hole in the brick wall...Nailed it! I do have one question/suggestion, a blast so powerful to throw bricks that far, would it not had damaged the handrail of the stairs?

...but, the brick on the ground doesn't look the same color as what's in the wall, also they are very clean, shouldn't there be some mortar still on the bricks that are blown out? Maybe some chunks where the bricks are still mortared to eachother.

I agree with Moon Puppy, with that note this dio will kick @$$.:D

Hello planeteers,

Guys, thanx for the tips.
Consider allready done.

But.......................

Yesterdayevening a little drama occured at our monthly modelingmeeting
I was thinking about what to do, and finaly started with the pigments.
Afterthe pigments were added, I decided to fix them with MIG's Thinner for washes.
As I allways do.
The whole floor was primed and had several coats of paint.
And then it happend:(.
The floor startd to melt:eek::eek::eek::eek::mad::mad:.

I was kind of flabbergasted, because I used the stuf on blue-foam before, and nothing had happend.
It seems that the blue-foam has a protective coating.
This coating was carved and cut, to represent the concrete slabs.
And ther you have it.

Yesterday evening when I got home it looked like this:

This morning as I woke up, it looked like this:

Looks bad huh??

Well, in the case of trial and error, i decided to get back on that horse, and tame it.
Here's the new base.

COOL HUH;):D??????

My only comfort is that I've made a try-out floor, and the next will hopefully be better.

Feel free to comment

Wow,

that just breaks your heart...

well mine anyway, all that beautiful work. Gotta give you credit for not being discouraged though, I would have lost it for sure.

What an Attitude!

First off I had no idea that you had carved that out of bluefoam...you're not going to tame that horse, you're going to own it and it's family. The Brickwork looks great though.

What is the new base you're working with and have you tested it yet?
