Hello fellow modelers and friends,

Its time for a new build.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/Intro.jpg

Sorry for the pic, I guess I’ve been watching too much Japanese TV lately. :D Just a reminder, before the crowd starts yelling for me to throw away the model and buy the Tamiya one, remember that this is the kind of modeling I enjoy. :p This will be a great challenge. Also this will be a great opportunity to start a group build. Nothing fancy like the Stug build but if you have a self propelled gun lets join in a group build. The deadline is Dedember 31st !!! Who is up for it??

I will be using Edwards PE set to enhance some details.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/1.jpg

Well, enough talk, lets build. There were some ejection pin marks that needed to be taken care of. Some green putty took care of that.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/2.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/3.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/4.jpg

The hull was together now…

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/6.jpg

I found a small surprise when dry fitting the hull. There is a gap that needed filling. A small plastic strip got that in working order in no time!

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/7.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/8.jpg

The upper hull is done.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/9.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/10.jpg

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/11.jpg

See you around in the next update. And brake out those Self propelled guns!!! :thumb:

Interesting subject. (I like your opening graphic!)
I have the Tamiya kit sitting half built in a box that has been on the shelf for 10 years or so- it'll be fun to see your progress on this manufactures version.I wonder what with Dragon's recent Panzer II chassis releases of late that maybe they will have a Wespe for us at some point.

Thanks James, too much Japanese TV lately. How far along is your Wespe? Maybe you’ll get enough motivation to start on it again. ;)

Im sure Dragon (or any other model company) will eventually come out with a Wespe model. Right now the Bison I is going to be released so its all a matter of time.

Good luck with tis kit Dave!

Hello once again. Its election day today and amazingly everybody gets the day off here on the Island. So here is a small update on the build.

I discovered that all the suspension arms have nasty sinkholes due to poor sprue design.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/1-1.jpg

Luckily that’s nothing the green treatment cannot fix.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/2-1.jpg

In place now.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/3-1.jpg

Next item on my “fix list” is the return roller supports. It appears that the front and rear ones are in the wrong place. So I removed them with a saw blade,

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/4-1.jpg

Added a plastic disc to compensate for the material removed by the saw,

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/5-1.jpg

And glued them back in the correct spot.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/6-1.jpg

That’s the progress so far.

Model on!!!

how about a later deadline? some more dramatic date like 02/02/2009 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stalingrad)?

that would give me time enough to finish the vehicles on my bench eventually!

Of course maybe this might mean nothing to you here but just thought I'd mention it...;)

You're ahead of me since I added the front flange bolts ( those holding the final drives I guess?)as these were missing, got the wheels together but just need to fill in the back inserts with putty or something to hide the gaps.

concerning your build dave - tackling an alan kit, boy you really seem to have some bowling balls in your pants ... if i may say so and use that kind of language (SCNR)

sooo, what now? ask big kahuna to create a SPG group build section or individual vbench sbs's? in the last case i would have a smaller problem and would have to ask big kahuna to create either a zombie-vbench (ressurrect the ole and original one if possible) or a new one!

Paul,

You are totally correct. The return roller supports have rectangular plates underneath. I totally missed them. Considering the pros and con of replacing them, I think I will leave them like that since they wont be too visible once the rollers and track is on.

I do plan to add the bolts for the final drives as they are missing also. Post some pictures of your build Paul. It will be good to see these differences.

Laura,

Bowling Balls?? Hahaha you crack me up gurl! :D Its fun to build not so good kits you know.

I don’t think making a separate section will be a good idea. I think is better if we just build them here on the Vbench, called like a “flavor of the month” thing. Maybe getting your bench back wouldn’t be such a bad thing now, wouldn’t it?? ;)

P.S. the video rocks!!!

Wow, this week a bunch of new people joined in and started their V-benches. That is exciting! Makes you want to do … well more modeling. :p

Time for the next update.

I started to add weld lines around the driver’s compartment and on the hinges of the hatch. I used the plastic rod + cement method for these.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/1-2.jpg

Then I added a few details on the engine firewall.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/2-2.jpg

More missing details

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/3-2.jpg

Next you have to install the fenders. Now since the fit in this kit is not the best I had to do some corrections in order to have the fender fit in place. I made a cut with the following dimensions.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/4-2.jpg

The cut.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/5-2.jpg

And the fender in place along with some more PE details.

Until next time :thumb:

I couldn’t agree more. While is great to have detailed kits, it takes away some of the fun in modeling.

Good fix Dave but my Tamiya kit shows these return roller mounts with rectangular plates under the mounts.

Good Luck! Paul :D

Ever since Paul pointed out that I missed the return roller support plates I’ve been thinking on how to fix this oversight. The problem was that with the fenders on it was impossible to remove the supports and add the plates. That is until….
…well until Ruben thought of a very ingenious way to solve the problem. I liked the idea and tried it straight away. Here are the results.

I started with marking a roughly 5mm x 5mm piece on a strip of plastic.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/1-3.jpg

Next, using a punch & die set a hole the same diameter of the return roller supports was cut out from the plastic.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/2-3.jpg

Then I separated the “would be” plate.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/3-3.jpg

The part fitted around the return roller supports all the way down to the base making them indistinguishable from a base plate.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/4-3.jpg

Now it was a matter of bolting them down with hexagonal rod bolts. ;)

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/5-3.jpg

There you have it. Thanks to Ruben for the idea.

Hello Planeteers and friends,

Guys, thanks for the nice comments.

James, thanks for sharing the photo of the suspension, you don’t happen to have a photo of the fighting compartment you could share? It would be of great help.

I am about to head for Ruben’s place and check things out as he makes the water for the Flak dio. But first its time for an update on this week’s work.

I place removed all the detail from the rear plate and set it in place. Again I noticed a nasty gap between the plate and the hull.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/1-4.jpg

And again a plastic strip save the day.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/2-4.jpg

Next it was time to rebuild the tow pintle. This is one of those things that makes you wonder what were you thinking when you decided in making this from scratch. It started as some bits of plastic.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/3-4.jpg

Next I added some more bits of plastic and some green putty.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/4-4.jpg

Finally here is the tow pintle along with the exhaust and the convoy light.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/5-4.jpg

Next I moved to the front of the vehicle where some serious work had to be done with the tow hooks. The original model’s were so bad that I decided to make them from scratch. I made them out of plastic and added some green stuff in order for them not to look flat.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/6-3.jpg

Next up where the parts where the spare track bar would go. They started as bits of plastic.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/7-1.jpg

Next some more bits of plastic were added.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/8-1.jpg

And finally here they are in place.

Well, I hope you enjoy this update, as always any suggestions are welcome.

Here's a couple progress photos...not an SBS but I'll try to keep you updated.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a228/alamagordo/Sturer%20Emil/IMG_0968.jpg

I probably should've re-sized the pics but I was in a hurry. Came out ok I think.

I completed the wheels tonight but I still need to clean them up, there was some flash on the front of the Idlers but not too difficult to remove.

I found it a little bit odd the wheels are in 2 halves, with alot of plastic to remove from the edges after cutting from the sprues. Maybe they figured the detail would be crisper?

The fenders and upper part are not glued yet.

I like how they designed the wheel axles, a hexagon that fits snugly into the hull openings to insure good alignment. The detail is good on the wheel faces...sooooo

Not much else happening now so on to step 6 and 7.

Later, Paul :thumb:

Saludos guys!!!

Happy New Year to everyone!!

Thanks for the encouraging comments. Paul, nice progress. I think it looks very good, how was the fit between the upper structure shields?

Work and other commitments have kept me away from posting, but not from modeling. Here is an update of the work so far.

I started working with the main gun.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/1-5.jpg

I added a gun barrel from Jordi Rubio. The kit’s plastic barrel is too long and the aluminum is the right length. I also scratched some parts as some parts like the hydraulic cylinders are just horrible. I did this one using brass tubbing.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i259/Terraformingrd/Wespe/2-5.jpg

Next up are the gun shields. They were supposed to have a flange bolted to the inner corner. So to make this I used a strip of brass roughly 2mm wide.

So that's what the question about the nuts were about.:D

Great as always, and inspirational to all. You can't believe how many are glued to your post and your inventions.

How did you glue the nuts? Krazy glue, or Future floor wax or diluted acrylic gloss medium?

I was planning to work with you guys (Vodoo Boys) this weekend, but Din mentioned that we'll have to wait till the 10th.:yell:

Well there's lots of time to model in between. So as you say "Model on!"

Thanks Charlie,

Yes, I asked you about the bolts on your trailer because yours seem like round rivets instead of bolts made of rod. I just glued mine with plastic cement.

Yes, Din was not able to be present at the January meeting so, we postoned it until the 10th. I'll see you there.
