How to paint fresh mud?

I hope this is the propper plaice to post this question. As the topic says, I'm wondering how to paint fresh mud. I'm working on a diorama and wants the ground work look like fresh mud. Is mixing clear varnish into the paint an good idea?

Yep, that works. You can also brush a little Future acrylic floor polish over the top for wetness or the MIG resin mixed in works as well.

Puddles can be made from the Future or something like Vallejo's Still Water.
