I was wondering today as I was organizing my paints. What would happen if I mixed enamel and Acrylic pant together and airbrushed it?
would the paint mix together? or just seperate like oil and vinager? Also how long do you guys think the drying period would be?
I am wondering because I want to mix modle masters dark yellow with tamiya's dark yellow to see how would it turn out.
thanks for any help

hmmm .... why don't you try it and let us know what happens....
:)
no, actually you shouldn't do this.
Paints have different solvents.
"Enamel" oil paint is based on petroleum solvents, that is, oil based.
Acrylic is water based.
The two don't mix. You will end up with a mess.

thanks panzerfaust
so enamel and acrylics can never be mixed. I once heard that if you combine both paints and dilute it with laquer thinner and grain or spirit it will somehow combine but don't know if it actaully works.
I heard the story from some guy in Russia while I was on a business trip. Dunno how accurate it can be but I shall try when I get a hold of some grain alcohal.
as anyone hear any similar stories?

Hi,
that might depend on brand of paints. As you may guess, not all acryls are really acryls. For example, Pactra Acryl Enamels are a puzzle:)
As in earlier post, generally acryls and enamels are not mixable. Not even all enamels are mixable or acryls. This is try and error, too.
But before you start to paint your state-of-the-art model with any mix, please test it! Mix, paint and let it dry so you can see what happens.
Dumb question: why would you want to mix different type of paints?
From my experience, at least following are mixable together:
Enamel:
Model Master +Humbrol+Revell+Molak
Acryls:
Tamiya+Model Master
Not mixable with other brands:
Vallejo(At least I haven't succeeded)

Doesn't this question sort of throw some doubt on granting the status of "advanced" member? Is this just based on the number of posts and not the poster's knowledge or ability? I'd think if I was visiting this site and saw "advanced" next to someone's name I could trust him for good advice. No offense against the poster, but just wanted to question the way the forum worked before I'd join. :)
