I read that you're supposed to keep areas you want to glue from getting paint on them, but a lot of the stuff I read it seems like the best modelers do just that, paint, then glue.
So what's the story?

When I pre-paint (the interior of wheel halves as an example), I usually mask glue contact points before spraying. If I forget, I must scrape the paint enough to show some bare plastic for the glue to work. Of course, if you use a cement like cyanoacrylate, you may not need to remove the paint but run the risk that the paint to styrene bond is weakened.
I hope this helps.

I assume it depends on what you're planning to mask as to what you use. I have a Pz IV, with a lot of little contact points for stuff that attaches to the fenders or sides. Should I use tape, Vaseline, scrape the points?

I'm guessing that you are refering to the tools and various equipment? If so, then you will only need to scrape the contact points where you will be applying the glue. I certainly would Not Try vaseline. Usually the challange is to keep the surfaces as clean as possible from dirt and oils for painting, spreading vaseline seems counter-productive to me.
The other option is to glue your equipment on prior to painting, then pick-out the items. For me, this option works best.

When you have a steady hand, then glue all the tools before painting them. If not, just paint them and when it is time to glue them, just add some glue to the attachment points a little bit before you actually add the pieces. It softens and melts the paint so when you attach the tools etc they will bond even with the now sludgy glue and paint mixture in between.

I'm with rick - tools glued before painting. For other things like stowage I have been know to use PVA glue!

If I pre-paint tools or small item I fix them on with Gator Glue, this is a acrylic glue much like pva but stronger, I also have started to use it to fix PE on to the models

BTW, I don't have a steady hand.

Well, that's a whole 'nother story! :yell: Seriously, though, even a steady hand is a learned skill, it just takes practice. ;)

I always paint my tools before gluing, allows for more in-depth treatment regarding even basic painting and then aging/weathering. Don't know where this peculiar way of doing things some armour modellers have of gluing everything down before painting, not the way I learned to do modelling, but I guess there are more ways than one to skin a cat. I 've never had a real issue gluing things down after, doesn't take much. Just my 2 cents. Experience will eventually allow you to develop your own way of doing things.
