before starting with my StuG III Ausf. B i wanted to refurbish my never ever really finished DML StuG III F/8 (that one with winterketten) and spent the last two days with it and two crew members ...
i removed the decals and washed it under the tab, then i started with the academy indy track links - boy what a pain all that cleaning was - and tried to solder a stowage frame (failed with that one). after that failure i added some mr surfacer 500 ... right now i started to add stowage ... maybe i'll make it until this evening to the repainting

the reddish "dust" on the vehicle is nothing else but rust i applied back then ...

It should show up nicely under some nice camo.:thumb: I think though, that the engine grilles should be replaced with PE ones.:p

you know my devotion to grey, do you? :D ... how about some yellow camo on grey? i'd like that a lot :) ...
I think though, that the engine grilles should be replaced with PE ones.:p
you're right ... i didn't pay attention on the grilles ... but i'll have a look at them shortly and see what i can doo to simulate pe screens ...

we're having a lot of fun dancing together rick! :thumb:
siim: i cut away those grilles and simulated some pe screens - i hope you like it better now :)
by accident i also cut away the taillight and the fire extinguisher. the light i luckily found again but the extinguisher is gone so i took a length of sprue and glued that in place and to cover it i used another tarpaulin ... the tarpaulin of shame

i just want to finish this one as quick as possible to be able to start with the ausf. b ... and counting this one in in the group build itself would be cheating as i only refurbish an old one already built ... so this one doesn't count, it's just my group build warm up round :)
I like the grey/yellow camo :)

no work on the stug today but on the two figures for it as i really don't like "ghost panzer" without crew ...
each one has one set of highlights and shadows on the uniforms so far ... tomorrow they'll get their second sets - the flesh areas only got one set of shadows until now ... unfortunately the subtle play of lights and shadows don't resemble on those in progress shots - the final pictures after finishing hopefully will do ...

again i have to point out that those colors are oil and that they still are very wet ... and therefore shiny ...

Nice work with figs Laura! Have you ever tried mixing oils with enamels. Sorthen drying time and gives more matt sheen.

no! i never thought of mixing oils with enamels - i have a strong aversion towards enamels and try to avoid them wherever i can so that idea never came to my mind!
it surely is something worthy to try out but i am so much used to oil colors so that i will continue with my used methods ... once an oiler - ever an oiler :D
i am too much afraid of messing up my figures!
but thanx for that suggestion - highly appreciated! :thumb: :)

Youre wellcome!:)
I know, I'm enameloiler and it seems to be me so hard to try acryls on figure painting.:D

I know, I'm enameloiler and it seems to be me so hard to try acryls on figure painting.:D
oilers are used to slow drying times, acrylists to quick drying times ... it's part of the painting techniques :)
soooo ... i applied the second sets of shadows and highlights to the figures, continued with the flesh parts and painted some details - no photos this time ...
then i just applied some footprints and the markings on the StuG:

I use enamel for quick drying time and matte sheen and mix oils in to em a little for better blending possibilities and not too quick drying time. Bill Horan uses humbrol enamels only and he says that them can blended 20-30mins after painting. But masters are masters.:D Should someday try to paint purely with acryls.

i surely never will :D
i painted the tarps, the tools and gave the figures some details:

both stuggies received their decals (worked out this time - phew!) and two washings with black and brown - pix have been shot immediately after applying ...
this one has been attached to StuGAbt. 243 meeting fate at stalingrad:

Wish, I could paint figures that good. :(
believe me - figure painting is much easier than building and painting a panzer ... the only thing is that you got to develop your own technique of doing lights and shadows ... i learned my own technique (took me around 100 messed up figures until my first satisfying one back then :D ) and then out of curiosity tried verlindens way once ... and never again - the result was total horror ... simply copying techniques is not the way (at least not for me)
later - end of 2006 - i learned that my technique is very close to the bannerman way of painting - easy and effective! do yourself a favour and get yourself "modelling panzer crewmen of the heer" (mark bannerman - osprey publishing) or "modelling waffen-ss figures" (calvin tan - osprey publishing)
take the best of various techniques and distillate your own one from them :)
