James, have you got a color scheme figured out for one yet..???
Plushy
02-05-2008, 02:53 AM
Colour scheme at the moment looks like green or maybe green . I havent really got as far as working out colours yet . I am tempted to build it up as a Afghanistan Maz with a T-55/54 on the back but i am not sure if i will build that idead first or maybe go crazy with the imagination and do something with a bit of a Sci-Fi twist ?
sprue shots are still coming i have gotten a bit sidetracked making some alterations to my modelling area .

How about doing a scene with a WW2 tank found in some East European country 60 years later and being recovered? The pic with plane is cool, maybe you could do something with the remnants of a Tristar Storch?
Plushy
02-06-2008, 02:01 AM
Evan i like the Aircraft idea but at the moment i am going to concentrate on just building the Maz first then work out whats going to go onto it later . But if you think of any more ideas let me know . it helps to have other people give ideas that i might not think of . :thumb:

02-06-2008, 12:26 PM
I like the aircraft idea although the MAZ is overkill for the Storch, with the wings folded, the Storch (Tristar kit base) or L-4H (Bronco kit base) could be towed by any truck.
Imagine WWII wrecks on that trailer (either recently dug up or after restoration)...

I have been looking at 1/32 scale aircraft and there is not much in the way of non german aircaft out there . Although i did find a nice looking Hind-E or maybe a MiG-3 .:) a Nice WW2 relic would look nice .

02-06-2008, 11:39 PM
... a nice looking Hind-E...
Now THAT would be something! Returning a shot down Hind during the Afghan Intervention...:thumb:
A 'small' scene showing the combo negotiating a turn on one of those cliff side roads with a BMP-2K providing cover (the BMP was capable of high elevation to scan the sky line for Mujahadeen 'terrorists'...
Wow... Thanks for letting me imagine that! :p

02-07-2008, 12:32 AM
Saul ,
i was thinking along the same lines as that but thinking along the lines of maz negotiating a Hairpin turn with a Hind-E wreck on the back ,when the driver finds he has a Flat/blownout tyre on the trailer and no room to move the Maz so he can fix it . Drop the BMP idea and replace with a couple of Afghan Locals and a Donkey watching the driver scratch his head to sort out his Dilemma .
Or for a What if Scenario a MAZ hauling a Large Soviet or German Mecha found after the end of the 1939 to 1956 World War Mecha is partially covered with a tarp and passing a couple of boys standing beside the road looking on in amazement at the Mecha on the MAZ .
Or a MAZ hauling a T-55 wreck on the back returning to russia from Chechnya .
Or a MAZ in Bosnia with a M36 Tank on the back or some Serbian Technicals.
So many ideas and possibilities. Lucky i bought more than one and i can always buy a few more :D

I just got my (review) sample today! Since I only have one Hind, I'll forgo that idea. I also got the 2008 Trumpeter catalog and they list the late as well. While preparing for a PSP kit review, I picked up the TM from Armybook.com and the Tankograd Special No. 2 book. I never did buy the PSP kit.
I am certain there will be AM goodies soon so do not fret about aircraft decals...just place some figures to perform 'blocking' maneuvers
I am looking forward to your build.

Hi James,
Sorry for the delay. This thing called sleep just comes over me each night, it's bad for my hobby. :(
I do not own a scanner, nor have access to one. The best I can do is take a photo. Using the kit part number, which item do you want to see if it is covered? I want to know if the 'empty' engine compartment is visible. If so, I will source two Maquette V-12 (T-34) engines to play the part. If anything, they will provide a light blocking function.
Regards,
Plushy
02-08-2008, 07:01 AM
Saul , i was mainly interested in the p.e parts for the engine cover . P.E number D1 the instructions arent 100% clear on how your supposed to fold them up but i have taken my best guess [see photos below ]. From what i can tell you can see into the engine compartment from the rear but the view is very limited by the Fuel Tanks .

For those looking for references, Tankograd is rumored to put this volume back in production now that the Trumpeter kit is available. The M-Hobby book is out of print. Aviapress may have copies. The Armybook volume (based on the TM) was limited to 3000 copies and then became an e-Book. However, Armybook shut its doors and the web site is down.

So whatcha got here is essentially a truck bigger than the BR-52? I've got to start hanging out over on the modern side more... since I've gotten out, I don't know what most of this stuff is anymore. So I take it this thing is for hauling Sov MBTs?
What a tonne of stuff to work out - I've always been a bit leery of these jumbo kits for fear of warpage, etc. (I've yet to attack the BR-52 for this reason). As I said - I have no knowledge of this bad boy, but it looks amazing. Are you building a new mantle piece to set it on? :)

Paul the MAZ was designed to haul around the T-54 .The MAZ uses virtually the same V12 engine it also has a winch capable of dragging a T-54 onto the trailer . The Engine puts out around 560bhp and 2420ft of torque :D. Maximum load for the trailer is 75 tons so it can haul most modern MBT`s .

Well my modelling mojo has come back for the moment so i worked on the trailer for the Maz and got it finished

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Thiokol/MAzTrailerDone003.jpg
And then i thought to myself maybe the Hind wont look that good on it and maybe a t-54 would be better so i grabbed the Hind box down and quickly taped the Fuselage together to get and idea of size and this is what it looked like .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Thiokol/MAzTrailerDone017.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Thiokol/MAzTrailerDone019.jpg
Its about then i thought $^%##$&%#&#$^$@#$%%$ this is gonna be a big job to get done and i need a whole lot more reference photos for this sucker .
So i need some help to find photos of helicopters and aircraft with small arms damage or SAM damage preferably of aircraft that werent totally destroyed afterwards .
Cheers ,

p.s and i thought 1:1 vehicles could be complicated .

I am really falling for this hauler. Great job on your build James.
Quite an ambitious project to include the Hind! Might be necessary to complete the hauler, work on some small projects, then come back to the Hind?

Hi Antonio,
Great news :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Thank you so much for the info !

James, I had a thought about the Hind, though I don't know if it will make things any easier. Perhaps rather than an build the entire bird, maybe you could be hauling a certain section(s). Something along the lines of what Stuke said, make it a smaller project say of only the fusalage, the engine with the blades tucked next to it on the bed, or maybe the tail section.
Either way, you are right...it's a hell of a big endevor!
May the MOJO be with you....

Hi James P,
The Hind could take a LOT of punishment before it went down. Most shoot downs ended up the tail breaking loose. The tail was usually removed at the join line for recovery (this from the Mi-25 manual).
The Soviets flew both the Mi-24A (Hind-A) and Mi-24D (Hind-D) early on and quickly replaced them with the Mi-24V (Hind-E) and Mi-24P (Hind-F) in Afghanistan. Afghan units were equipped with the Mi-24A (Hind-A), Mi-24DU (Hind-D), Mi-25D (Hind-D), Mi-25V (Hind-E), and later the Mi-35 (Hind-F). Virtually every helicopter flew with the up-rated TV-3-117V engines (as in the Trumpeter kit) even if originally built with the lesser engine.
The odd numbers were export variants with different avionics packages. The ones in Afghanistan also had English stenciling and manuals. Afghan pilots trained at the International School of Brotherhood (40Km from Moscow) were taught in English. That was one of the three languages the courses were offered in (Spanish and Russian were/are(?) the other two).
I mention that since many shoot downs caused the loss of several of the Mi-24/25 distinguishing features leaving just a fuselage, flare dispensers (usually expended), busted open ammunition doors, and stripped cockpits. This makes it easy for you to paint both trailer and helicopter in Afghan colors if so desired. The Mujahideen would shoot down the hunchback and teams would swarm down to capture or kill humans, strip the bird of usable ammunition and guns, and try to demolish the cockpit enough that the turnaround time at a maintenance unit was maximized.
I don't recall if the Trumpeter kit has IR suppressors over the exhausts. Later helicopters (both Russian and Afghan) were equipped with them. To add them, the Soviets had a field kit whereby they cut the exhaust pipes, added a mounting collar and hardware, plus added a jammer. All helicopters had ASO-2V flare/chaff dispensers either strapped below the tail (early with four strips total) or on specialized mounts on the fuselage sides near the tail boom (six strips in total).
Payloads in Afghanistan (usually stripped from shoot downs) included long range fuel tanks for patrolling. The location of these depended on the mission. A long range patrol meant two fuel tanks on the wings' outer pylons since patrols usually had a landing party carried within. A covering mission (or hunter-killer) had a fuel tank placed within the troop cabin allowing the 80mm rocket pods and two bombs (100 0r 250 kg) for the wing stubs. Outer (anti-tank missile) mounts were empty on the Soviet aircraft but loaded and used late in the war by the Afghans. Their Mi-24D were equipped with wire guided Malyutka missiles which proved effective against caves BUT the helicopter had to remain stable in order for the weapons officer to guide it accurately. Other Afghan ordnance seen were 80m & 57mm rocket pods, 100kg & 250kg bombs, gun pods, napalm tanks, and cluster bombs.
Many more shoot downs were of the Mi-17 (also a Trumpeter kit) and the Mi-4 gun ships (early in the war) - again a Trumpeter kit.
Richard, note that the ANA logo seen on the MAZ is different from the Kabul regime logo during the Soviet intervention.
Obviously, :D the Crocodile (Cocodrilo) is a favorite subject of mine!

Plushy

Saul ,
thanks for the Excellent Info , i know have a much better idea of how to proceed . I have the WWP book on the Hind as well as few other books . If i remove the Tail i will have to scratch build the internal structures in the tail and the Fuselage . I will be using the Part pe sets to add loads of detail to the interior . i have also come across mention of a resin detail set from a company in Brazil heres the link
http://www.largescaleplanes.com/reviews/Aftermarket/Helicopters/Warhammer/Mi-24Cockpit/Mi-24.html
I dont know if it went inot production as i havent managed find one yet , I have also looked at the Cobra company detail set but i am not sure about the detail on them .
Afghanistan looks like the best option to have them together .
Any chance i could get more details on the Mi-24 manual . were i can get one ?

That's one helluva impressive combo. You gotta do the Hind. Every man and his dog is gonna build a MAZ with a T-55/62.
I am real keen on the Hind so please do a SBS on it. I got a couple of Blackhawk updates from Cobra Co and truth be told, I wasn't too impressed with the quality of the details. Those Warhammer sets look ace and I would definitely get them..if I can find them.

Hi Lawrence,
Sorry, that is not an actual Hind. I've seen this film before at a US Army base. One of the commentators has it right, it is a vismod (visual modification) Sikorsky S-55 as used for missile range tests. Note the non retracting landing gear.
The US Army has access to real Hinds but need them for training and would not destroy them. The first flyable Hind they could keep came via Nicaragua when a pilot defected to Honduras.
James, I do not know of a commercial entity to get the Hind manual. The English language one as printed by the US Army is still restricted and not declassified.

James Tainton

Hi Richard ,
the build has stopped for the moment while i get a Jagdpanther done and out of the way then it will be full steam ahead again on the Maz and Hind . I have all the references and detail sets i need now so the only thing stopping me is the Jagdpanther .

Some shot down Hinds.

This one was shot down in Chechnya, missiles by then destroy the fuselage.

This photo is from 1983. Fairly intact and the Soviet troops around it make it seem as though it was providing cover (shot down near friendlies).

Another early Hind shoot down.
Fromthe war over Yugoslavia comes this one:

Here is a register of all publicly disclosed Hind helicopters in the US:

Regards,
The last pic with destroyed HIND is from glorious operation ''Oluja'' and it is our-Croatian bird that has been shoot down.
The pitty is that we have a good number of HINDs but they are parked on the airfild and they are now rotten from age and uncarring.
I say damn pitty.

Damn that's awesome! One question though, how are you going to paint the cockpit with all those printed/prepainted details? Liquid mask?
And are those knockouts I see on the back of your instrument panel?
Plushy
09-25-2008, 05:25 AM
Hi Evan yes they are knock outs but they will be hidden by some hoses and interior detail . Liquid mask will be used on the guages when i paint everything . :D
