Hello!
As Sam announced he was going to build this model I thought I would call mine out as well, just to create some suspense.:p I am quite interested in how Sam will approach his model.

I have made some progress on it and hope to put some pictures up once daylight becomes available. So far I have found it superb.

Is this a new kit? Im not that familiar with Russian stuff but I seemed to have missed this one?Yes it is quite a new kit. It was released before Christmas.;)
Ok, now on to the build.
The kit is just wonderful. The fit is superb, the sprue attachment points are logically placed. The cast texture was sufficient as it came in the box, but the IS tanks all have quite rough texture to them and sometimes even cracks.
I used glue, Tamiya putty and various stiff brushes to add the texture and so it might appear messy right now, but after it has some paint on it should prove to be quite nice....I hope.:p
As you can see I have used putty on the barrel as well. It is not necessary as the fit is spot on, but I wanted to be sure that I will not discover any surprises once the weathering starts.
The rear plate had to be sanded on the top so it wouldn't stand out so much in relation to the engine cover plate.

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2283.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2293.jpg
The lower rear plate needs a weld added to it. Same applies to the tow hook as the welding there was very messy at times.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/jsu152m_1_27.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2296.jpg
A shot of the wheels....super!
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2297.jpg
The turret got heavy texturing. I moved the turret seamline a bit lower as it appeared to sit better to me that way. I used stretched sprue to recreate it. I also enhanced the mold removal burr with some 0,3mm plastic sheet and then used a saw to make the cut pattern on it. I must say the roughening process is the best thing about these Russian tanks.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2288.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2298.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2289.jpg
I turned my attention to the front again. I have used stretched sprue to enhance the welds. I hoped they would melt lower, but nothing a little sanding and putty can't fix. The welds I added are a bit out of proportion to each other, so I will have to make some of them bigger/smaller.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2295.jpg
That is it for now!
Cheers!

It is soooo awesome to see so much Soviet stuff being featured at once. What a change from the norm. Its great. Great pics too Siim. It looks like it is flying together at will. Question, do you think the surfacer is needed? Were you going for a very heavy cast look? Keep it up.

Roy, the additional surface texture is really not 100% needed. The kit parts have a subtle cast texture on them so it will build up nicely as it comes. What I have noticed on WWII soviet cast turrets is that they range from rough to a down right lunar landscape. With all the German stuff I usually build, I have become eager to really simulate a very rough look. What better place than a IS huh....:)
Marek, there is far more stuff in the stash, that is calling me as well. I recently picked up the DML Pz II F as well. It looks very cool and so SMALL compared to the stuff on the bench right now.

I haven't heard that. Dmitry Kriyakin has one of these underway on another site. He is very critical of innacurate kits, but has only commented on the rear plate (too tall) and the tracks (not individual links). Other than that, he is quite impressed with the kit. Something like a turret too small or hull too big would get his immediate attention, especially after living with the inaccurate DML kits.
It seems to me that the DML blogger should restrict himself to commenting on errors in DML kits. There is certainly enough material there to keep him busy for many months.

I like the cast texture in the road wheels, and your grey work looks good. Great real tank photos as well - some of those welds !?!... I guess thats whats happens in times of emergency and guys like me are handed the torch - "What's the end with the blue flame do?"
Any idea on how to replicate the texture on Roy's example? Paper Mache? Oatmeal? :D

According to my few measurements the basic hull and turret measure up precisely to the plans I have.
The blogger has to say something bad as DML kind of passed the opportunity to get a scoring kit on the market. (I know the old IS-2 series, but still they have announced the premium version.)
He clearly makes some ridiculous claims like the tracks of the Tamiya kit reaching further out on the sides than the fenders. That is how they are supposed to be!:D
how about the tracks are they vinyl?
Erik, there are the vinyl tracks and then the link and length tracks with the lower run being a one piece and some little segments being one piece as well, but on the top there are single links so tracks sag is simple to achieve.
who makes the right kind of link to link for these?
I don't really see the need for AM tracks, but Friul and Modelkasten make some.:p

Sooooo......
More relentless progress.
The welds that I added are distinguishable from the photos and so I will not list every place I added them. I will mention, that the main welds on the hull sides and the main front-middle hull weld are still the original Tamiya ones, but i just restored them with glue and a knife blade since they ad kind of clogged up during the texture fest. I have decided that I will not add the tanks to the sides and the front fender pieces will stay of as well.

I take this to mean that the tracks do not extend past the fenders. I have found photos wehre they seem to extend and others where they do not. So, I need to compare them to see if there were two different widths of fenders...didn't the KV series have the same properties?

Regards,
I do not know about the KV-1 but the pre-production KV-2 (trial versions that saw action against Finland) did infact have wider fenders. I have a couple of pics of these in one of my KV books. They look like regular fenders with a type of extension making them wider.

Hi Siim,
That is a very good book. Michael (English translation) Svirin is well known for his research, although Exprint is not (English translation of the publisher's name). Armada also has a book on the IS tank and the plans in Exprint are the same from Model Constructor (Modelist Konstruktor).
I have noticed that the Tamiya gun is longer than the Dragon gun. Now I must take a trip and visit the gun to measure! Perhaps the information is in one of my books? I'll need to check.
Btw, I picked up the Tamiya kit and it looks superior to the Dragon kit, not so much in details, but in correcting the height and better fit. The Dragon tracks are different and look good aside from the thick grip pad on the face. Zvezda's has the correct lower hull height and better shapes in some areas so I may be forced to use some of its parts on a Dragon kit with corrected lower hull so as not to waste anything. Preliminary measurements show that Dragon's ISU fighting compartments can be mated to Tamiya's hulls with a little surgery. :thumb:

Hei, do you think Tamiya will ever release an ISU? I personally think seeing anything based on this vehicle/kit again from Tamiya would be a small miracle. Really sad to see this mold wither away in some factory...
There are actually several DML IS-2 kits staring me in the face every time I go to the LHS, but yeah, if I will get duplicate kits it will be the big T one.

More progress on this big baby.
I added the casting numbers...
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2327.jpg
I assembled the figures, but I am not 100% sure if I will use them. They do make a nice scale comparison though and should give the model some life so to say.
The surface of the cast turrets often had cracks due to the cast process and these were just crudely welded full. They seem to run randomly so I used a mini drill and carved some grooves which I filled in with stretched sprue and added some weld texture.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2332.jpg
The tracks were just wonderful. The fit was super and the clean-up was not so bad.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/Copyofislindikesed.jpg
when looking at photos, most of the vehicles seem to have extras on them such as logs and/or some tarpaulin.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/is044.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/is042.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff110/panzergrenadier91/CopyofIMGP2339.jpg
The ''logs'' is from the woods and the tarpaulin rolls are done with wet tissue paper.
The tow cables are leftovers from a Trumpeter KV kit. Tamiya gives you string, but I didn't fancy that. I am not sure about the final positioning of things as right now the additional stuff kind of over powers the vehicle. I will look into it once I have some paint on it.

Everything on this one looks great, the tracks the weld seems. I’d say go for the figs, but that is my personal opinion, I kind of like figs on every model.
As far as the extra gear over powering the vehicle, I think in any case it just make it appear more massive. I’d say leave it like it is, it looks nice.

Hello everybody!
First of all I would like to say I am sorry that I have not been participating on the forum that much lately. Life has just been really busy and exhausting. :(
So...I have spent the time I have getting some bench time.
What I have basically done is coat it with black to act as a primer. Them Model Master Dark Green followed by a highlighting coat of Medium Green. I then decided to go with the 'Berlin'' style for the markings. I tried to get the white really sloppy, I think it worked. Weathering was done with various filters, a dark wash and now onto the flat coat a pastel wash. Right now I am really just taking my time with this and try not to rush it to the end.

How do you protect the surface from fingerprints in the end? A matt finish would eat up the pastels, right? That is indeed a downside to the pastel treatment. It is so vulnerable to any touching. I am not going to seal it up with anything as indeed that would kind of destroy the effect. I just have to be careful handling it while finishing it. Hoping for the best I guess.

Hello Siim,
excellent work and an awesome weathering!
I especially like the tree trunk discolored by the exhaust.
How did you achieve this effect?
It looks very convincing!

Good finish to a terririfc build. Great results - and I too like the big sooty spots off the exhausts - give us your techique. Take a look at the the green T-55 over on ML Constructive comments - I thought of you tank when I was looking at his.

Turned out pretty good Siim! Though maybe the headlight lense could use a little dirt...then again, maybe the crew wiped it clean.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone!:)
The blackening of the log is partly natural. I cut some twigs on a rainy day and thought that they could be dried out in a microwave. Well, they did try fast and almost caught fire.:D Otherwise the blackening was achieved with pastel dust. First applied with solvents and the second time dry.
About the lamp in front, well Tamiya didn't include a clear lens to put in front of it so I thought I will not use the green plastic one either. With all the damage to the fenders, the lamp glass intact would look odd as well. Most of the photos even depict vehicles with not headlight altogether. The clean headlight kind of adds some visual contrast as well.
All the best!

Hi Siim,
Very murky, dusty, muddy, filthly looking model. I like it very much. The overall tone is just right. Well done!
Cheers, MartinD
Awesome :thumb: I like it :)

It really is a super finish. I really like the log, can you tell us the colors?

Thanks!
The colors used on the log.... well I don't remember exactly, but I started out with a clean piece of wood without the bark. I gave it diluted coats of dark grays, a little blue and brown. Between some coats and in the end I did some light sanding to see if it will give it some interest, and I must say I like the way the newly exposed wood added variations.

WOW
This is some weathering. You said with pastel....well did you mix it with water and airbrush it or did you use a regular brush to apply pastel mud?
I have some problems with the pastel and the aibrush. The efect isn't quite good.To be correct it is horrible
I know,stupid questions...:o
