This is Tamiya's Schwimmwagen, which I will mostly build ootb, and test a few new (to me) techniques on.
The shovel needs some extra atention, as i spilled some glue over it :?

To save some time I'll be using some old stuff i took from my sparesbox. The base will be reworked with snow and mud, the figure is a leftover from a disastrous 251 project...

I started testing a new technique to simulate a whitewash, using ...... toothpaste :P the first test are very promissing, i now have to test how it reacts to paint, varnish and white spirit.

Ok, back-up a second. Are you using the toothpaste instead of the hairspray or as the whitewash itself?

I like schwimmies! I have used toothpaste before. I used it to remove fiinsh layers to get to what was below.

Rick, I'm using the toothpaste as a whitewash, but I'm still testing it.
Marco, Like I said, I'm still testing, might not work after all :p
John, what did you remove with it? As I found out the layer of varnish and pigments that was on the test model came off as well when i removed the toothpaste.... I do not want to mess up the paint finish on the Schwimmy

Well, toothpaste is an abrasive. You can use it to scrub away acrylic paint layers and produce a faded whitewash effect. Same basic premise as the hairspray and detergent method...it works better when you have an enamel basecoat so the toothpaste dosent scrub ALL the paint away, just the top coat, or the whitewash coat. I think I read about this technique in Fine Scale Modeller over 10 years ago, so I might be a little sketchy on the details. :)

Small, but should look quite nice when finished. Toothpaste....hmmmm....well I am more than curious as to if it will work.:):)

I did some more work....

And some more tests on the toothpaste wash...
Scratches are done by toothpics and other sharpish objects

Acrylic paint adheres quite good, but is tricky to apply, as the water in the paint dissolves the toothpaste...

Oils and white spirit don't attack the paste, and it can be removed (including the paste) with a que tip

Pigments stay where they are, after fixation with WS

I'm going for it, and see what gives in the end

Hey Jan, interesting effects with tthe toothpaste. Note when you put the schwimmy together the top and bottom halves will form a nasty seam visable on the inside. This should be filled as there is no seam there in the 1:1 schwimmy.

Boy you ain't kidding...I experienced that same Seam from Hell, and t's in a real awkward place to get to.
I will say that this whole toothpaste deal will be interesting viewing!

Yes I noticed the seam, it will indeed be hard to get to :(
We'll see what gives ;)

Nice work Jan!
Your experiments with toothpaste are quite interesting. It seems like it may work. I was wondering if it could degrade with time. Maybe there is only one way of finding out.
Dave
Nice work...keep it up :)
