View Full Version : Hetzer in the mist, autumn 1944

Hello all
Here's my second project for now. T 34 dio isn't so much time consuming as was the "Into the Reich" scene so I've decided to start yet another thing. This is going to be a Hetzer firing at some American troops, advancing in the Aachen area in autumn 1944. The building in the background will be changed. Here I'm going to post an sbs about casting and sculpting in plaster.
I'm going to put there about 3 or 4 figures. The model itself is the old DML Hetzer early verion, it will receive aber fenders and armorscale barrel. The wheels, gun and MG are dry fitted for now.
I hope you will enjoy the process.
The layout:

That's it for now.
See you soon.

Nice, nice, Radek,
I allways had a softspot for the 38t series, or "mini destroyers" as Lawrence calls ém.
The layout is looking great, and I like what you've done with the ditch. It brings a little "depth" in the whole scene;-)

Hi folks.
I'm glad you like my new idea.
I was thinking to take part in the Op. hetzer on Mig's forum, but I don't really know if I'll be able to finish this quickly. I have exams now and I have to learn so I'm rather off for at least 3 weeks from now on. That's why I'm posting this only here. There's no rush here at pA :)
John I just love making dios :) I think any model, if possible, should have it's own piece of ground.

Hallo Stefan
So ok, here are some photos how I do it (this is going to be a factory wall for another small dio from "the second Kharkov" , I'm planning):
First I take a piece of glass, and lego bricks (sorry for the reflexes on the glass plate):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips1.jpg
To prevent the mold from moving I use bits of clay that I use for sculpting:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips2.jpg
This holds the mold in place.
Then I mix plaster with water (Important thing is to mix it slowly, otherwise there will be air bubbles):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips5.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips7.jpg
The mixture should be very diluted-like milk for example. This'll make the plaster to level easily in the mold.
Then I pour the mixture (again, do it slowly, help yourself spreading the mixture in the mold with a spatula):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips8.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips9.jpg
Don't worry if this happens:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips10.jpg
You can always remove it after the whole thing thickens.
After about 20 minutes (time of thickening actually depends on how much water you add) I separated the plaster plate from the glass and legos:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips11.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips12.jpg
The final stage was to remove all unwanted parts from the back of the plate (the front is perfectly even):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips13.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips14.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Varia/gips15.jpg
Hope that this'll help all of you guys a bit.
Cheers

Very nice SBS. Did you know you can accelerate the set of plaster by either adding salt to the mix, or ground up set plaster? both seed the crystal growth that sets plaster.

After about 20 minutes (time of thickening actually depends on how much water you add) I separated the plaster plate from the glass and legos:
this is exactly where i fail normally, as my moulds always break when i try to move them from my glass surface. Maybe this comes from having too much water in the mix, i still do not know.
Do you already add openings for doors and windows at that stage, again with legos?

Thanks for the tip John. I have to try it out.
Stefan I use plaster used for filling holes in walls. It hardens quickly and is not so vulnerable to cracking. When I tried the same method with plaster used for softening walls there were problems with separating it from the mold and glass, and it was much more breakable.
I normally curve the windows and doors but I have to try making them with legos or something else. This should ease the construction process.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Martin
Sorry for the delay. Well I use "normal" plaster. I don't know how it's called in English. it's used to fill holes in walls an such things. I never tried with modelling plaster, but maybe it's ok too? Most important feature is that it shouldn't stick to much to the glass when hardened.
My Hetzer is ready to get some paint on.

Radek,
From what I've heard, modelling plaster has a finer grain thant wall filler. This lessens the chances of air bubbles. But, your work looks very good too! I think I just have to give it a try one day.

Hello guys.
I'll try to make an SBS, I promise, but I'm not to good with making them so be patient and tolerant :)
Erik actually I think that this is the only way. It looks very time consuming but it's quite easy to paint it all. Here's a fast instruction how I do it:
I firstly apply a coat of humbrol redbrown color (I use h160 or h70, doesn't really matter that much because eventually everything will be covered with artistic oils). Then I apply a dark wash (van dyck braun or raw umber) and I let it dry.
After doing this comes the part with applying oils - I mostly use yellow ocher, siena, raw umber, van dyck braun and white cadmium mixes. At first I make a reddish mix of siena and ocher with a small addition of white and v.d braun and I paint all the bricks in this color. Then after a while I start making all the highlights (with ocher, white and siena mix). After this come all the shades (siena plus umber, v.d braun and ocher). After finishing all the painting I once again darken all the hollow lines between the bricks (not washing this time but painting with thin paintbrush).
It's a piece of cake :) You just have to try it. It took me one evening to paint all the bricks on this building. Now I wonder how long will take to paint a factory building ,I'm planning for my StuG III F from Stalingrad :D
That's all. Thanks for looking guys.

Dear Radek,
Hetzer looks great! I love that mud. Will you change colours on the hatches - they looks too similar to the rust on the exhaust, at least on the photos. And where is a wire to the Notek? ;)
As for the diorama - what about differentiating the grass a bit, with other shades of green, or even yellow?
I believe that dynamic figures would fit here much better.
Reagrds,
Mateusz
Hello Radek,
great progess on your Hetzer diorama!
I also think that "more in action" figures fit better in the scene.
I like your ground work with the muddy shiny track traces;)
How did you do that?

Hi
Mateusz...you say a wire?..hmm , I'll add one then :) I've started with the grass today. I'm going to add more foliage to this scene, just be patient :) And about those hatches, I was thinking to repaint at least a bit the exhaust, for more color variation.
Notger thanks for your comment, the shiny effect is achieved with vallejo's still water -a bit dilluted with water.

Hi Radek.
Your Hetzer is stunning. Beautiful painting and the weathering makes it looks so real. Very well done :thumb:.
Your building is also very nive, but......Compared to the Hetzer I think it looks like it's from a cartoon. What I mean is that you've done a great paint job on it but maybe you've over done it.
I would try to paint the bricks in more varying hues, the roof as well.
After all, the building has existed for a much greater time than the Hetzer and should, naturally, look more weathered.
Maybe use the same weathering technic is you did on the Hetzer ?
The composition is also great with the tank moving across the ditch. One of those simple details that will make a lot to the whole scene :).
The title is good as well (similar to mine "Murderous Mist") :thumb:, and this leads me to your choice of figures. As others have written I'd also pick some figures in action poses. Not in full action but poses that will show them expecting action.
Maybe an two man MG-team and a grenadier. The MG-team contains one man with a MG 42 and the other guy with an ammo box in one hand and his rifle in the other. Additional ammo belts around his neck.
The grenadier could be carrying a rifle as well, but with a rifle grenade attached to it.
The loader throwing out a shell can still be used. After all he might be throwing out old shells from their last engagement.
Oops. Didn't mean to write this much, but when it comes to dioramas I just get all started up .
GOOD WORK and bring us new pictures !

Thanks a lot for your support guys.
Mattias, about figures - actually you read my mind because this was my initial idea to put a MG team in the ditch and a accompanying grenadier, all awaiting some action. But then, after having a chat with a fellow modeler, I've decided to make a variously dressed trio rushing into action together with the Hetzer, all breaking through enemy lines. Now I have a mess in my mind :)
Unfortunately I have some other works to be done before I start those figures and I hope that perhaps during the first days of may I'll be able to show what I decided to go with.
And about the building, I think that I'll leave the colors as they are, but I can add some more weathering - a wash of raw umber should do the trick.
Thanks for all your suggestions Mattias.
Radek
P.S.
I have a question -empty shells for the gun at this time should be green/olive or can I paint them in copper/gold color?

green or steel would be most apropriate for this stage of the war ;)

Thanks for your response Jan.
Here are the pictures of the finished (I think) groundwork (besides the wooden barrel in the background). Things left to do are the figures. I decided to give more green shades to the roof tiles, just like Mattias suggested.

You've done a beautiful job on this one Radek :thumb:.
The green shades to the roof made a big difference. Much better.
I also like how the brighter hues on the Hetzer make it stand out against the surroundings.
The only thing I'd like you to improve is to apply some more shades to the grass. The green is to even and bright, just like in spring time.
Maybe some darker shades and more important, some yellow-brownish colours for dried and dead grass. It's autumn time, right ;).
You can also blend the border between the grass and the road a bit.
Now, I'm just looking forward to your next update. I'm eager to see how your figures turn out. Soon I hope !

I'll think about that grass. A bit of airbrushing should do the trick.

Hey Radek,
simply beautiful work.
This is one of the best Dios I´ve ever seen!
I especially love the colors you chose!
The layout is great as well, but I have to agree with John, some more scratches on the Jagdpanzer 38(t) where it hit the post would be better. :)
Can´t wait for an update!

Hi guys
Thanks for such nice words. I promise I won't let you down with my next works :)
Carlos my StuG is halted right now. I started passing some exams from my summer semester exam session. Tomorrow's the next one. When I find some free time for more than one diorama, I assure you I'll post some new pics.
Martin thank you very much. The figures are on their way.
Rick, thanks man! Good to here what you say.
Markus the driver was very gently - he didn't scratch the nose :) just kidding, If you and John say so, than I'll add some scratches on the bow.
Stuke now is going to be the best part so keep an eye on this thread ;) I'm really glad you like it.
See you guys till next posting

Radek, excellent finish all round. Like Rick said, you're stepping up to becoming a favorite diorama builder.
I like the contrast in this build from the barn, groundwork to the model itself.

Hi planet
Sorry for being idle for such a long time. Here's the update, finally I have managed to sculpt the figures.

I've added some left US gear:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Hetzer%20Oct%201944/Resizeof2008-08-12024.jpg
Soldiers from the squad:
Assault trooper wearing the standard WH camo smock:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Hetzer%20Oct%201944/sturmgruppe1.jpg
Second grenadier, wearing sturmartillerie style jacket:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Hetzer%20Oct%201944/sturmgruppe2.jpg
And the commander (wearing the WH smock too) calling other troopers to attack:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Radetzki/Models/Hetzer%20Oct%201944/sturmgruppe3.jpg
The gear is from dragon and tamyia, heads, boots and hands (most of them) are resin.
I hope you like it. Now all I have to do is paint them :)
I'm hopefully closing to the finish of this project.

Hello guys
I'm glad you like them. I have two more started but I decided to put only 3 figures there, because the diorama is quite small.
Today I'm going for a two week holidays, so next update will be just after I come back, in early September. Be patient :)
