View Full Version : Oooh d'oh! Rookie Mistake

Hola one and all :)

After reading a ton of posts here on pA for some time and getting the creative need to build something I took the pluge this past weekend. Its been a long time since I tried to build and paint a model, I think it was back in '98 when I finished the last model. Ever since then its been just figures for me, mainly sculpting, but also a bit of painting.

Anyways, I've had the Trumpeteer KV1 kit for some time, even though I havent built anything I have bought a few...juuuust a few though :)

So this weekend I put the kit together, it goes together great, although I really didnt mess too much with filling seams etc as I mainly wanted to get my feet wet before plunging into the world of PE and 'serious' model construction.

This is the first model I've airbrushed and I did some oil weathering on it as well. And to help cure the oils and to kill the sheen a bit I put the model under a 100W light bulb. It worked fine for the left side and the top, but when I did it for the right side the whole back right corner melted and caved in a bit. See the pictures....d'oooooooh!

Good thing that I didnt get too far with the build, as I was pretty pleased with how it was coming along.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this d'oh moment, and I'll be looking for a new KV1 kit to start over on!

Lesson learned...and it will not happen again!

Oh my (insert bad words here)!

I have a bunch of KV turrets that I'll never use, mainly Tamiya and some dated resin pieces. Send me an email or PM me and we can figure out how to salvage this.

Cheers

Anders, too bad, cuz that was a great paint job for a rookie!

Thanks guys!

Scott, thanks a lot, very kind offer. Part of me wants to just get a new kit, and part says to finish it and keep it...it is after all the 'first' you know.

The pictures are quite dark, it is a bit lighter in person.

Anders, looks good despite the flub (and a minor one at that).

Question for you though.....what paint(s) did you use for your base coat? I'm working on that very kit right now (model 1942, simplified turret), and would like to try and replicate your look.

Ouch! I did this once too! It's not a total loss, you could place it in a small scene, belly up na thus not need the turret! It was looking pretty good too, a real shame!

Hey Anders, I think that it's not a mistake, but a rite of passage...I've done that also, for me it was a Hotchkiss under the lights while taking pictures. You know, action shots of melting plastic!

The KV looks great.....BTW, I also love your figs...and good luck with Helo

So, last night I was over on Hyperscale and found they have a 50 page blog on nightmare builds called modelling disasters. It kind of makes one feel better when you screw something up your self. :p

http://www.clubhyper.com/forums/themepicsframe.htm

check it out, its entertaining.

I tried a similar techinique to accelerate the drying of a group of StuG road wheels once. I came back and they had all become severely malformed and shrunk to about 50% of their orginal diameter in the process.

Ouch, that must be real frustrating. Yeah it has happened to me once and I just take it as a natural thing every modeler has to go through.;)

Thanks guys!!

I knew I wasnt alone in this, and special thanks for the 'sympahy thread', somehow it makes you feel better!

I have ordered a new kit, well actually two...the KV I and KV II with some PE goodies and fruil tracks this time. Can't wait to get started on the new ones.

As for the colors used. I started out with [all Vallejo Model Color], Russian Green, added some Military Green,USA Uniform, Black, and a little Yellow Green, dilluted with water and rubbing alcohol. This was airbrushed over a black undercoat. Then this was highlighted with 4 shades of same mix with gradually more Yellow Green in the mix. It was a little too dark, so next time I will do it a little bit lighter as the oil wash with Burnt Umber made it quite dark.

Thanks for the info Anders. I just wish Vallejo and I could get along. I may just have to try again.

Give them a try Kevin, they are super paints!

John,

I thought about adding a flag or drape or something to cover the corner as it is fairly centrally located to that particular corner. But I feel that would be waaaay to obvious!

Hm....maybe something can be done after all! Have to think about some scenario or diorama possibility. Any ideas out there?

Ok how about this, insted of belly up, put in on its side in the mud or a very large mud puddle, with some of your beautiful figures surveying the "problem".

Ooooo, only if you take pics! :D

put it under a bridge, with another one on top of it. I actually have a pic of that from the T-34 book.

How about the t-50 on top of the t-34 with another t34 ontop of the t-50!

Great ideas guys.

I do like the mud idea, although may be a bit more ambitious then what I want to do right now, although the kit isnt going anywhere and could be used for this at some stage.

The Bridge idea...that's even more ambitious, although I am sure it would be a striking scene if done properly!

Anders

Don't see any problem - all you have to is figure out how to model the point of impact of the large calibre shell which caused the damage . . . .

Make it into the KV-85 variant.

Solves your problem with the KV turret.........

Would a large caliber gun really only 'bend the crap' out of armor like that? Seams like if it was hit that hard, it would surely penetrate.

Whats the KV-85 variant? Sounds intriguing!

Anders,

If you decide to scrap it, keep both the hull and the turret. Think of the "wedgy" possibilities.....

Hey Mike!!

Good to see you here! I have allready thought about scrapping the turret for a wedgie, which may just be the perfect solution for the turret in its current condition. I just have to sculpt a Russian to go with it.

Larry,

Now thats something interesting! Wonder what the driver was drinking (or how much) when he thought he could just drive over the T-34...and he knocked the turret off in the process? He had to be hauling @ss! Talk about whiplash hitting a T-34 turret in another tin can!

The one ontop surely 'fell' off the bridge?

Man, I can just imagine the company comanders reaction when he saw what his boys had accomplished! I bet he was livid and got some use out of his side arm :)

One can only imagine :D

I kind of doubt that the T70 knocked the turret off by ramming it. Although, I don't know how else it would have come off? Would have liked to have been there for that fiasco :p

Haha yeah no doubt. The word 'cluster f%#k' comes to mind. Im still amazed that something like that would, and could happen.

I would have loved to see someones reaction to a diorama of the 'incident' that hasn't seen this picture, I bet they would think...yeah riiiight!

The KV-85 was essentially a KV-1S with a T-34/85 turret.

Thanks Kevin,

Thats what I thought, but wasnt sure. Did a google search on it and they do look pretty spiffy! Almost look a little like the JS-3's with the low turret compared to the rest of the tank.

Well...here is the latest goodies in regard to this thread. I got another couple of KV kits with some after market stuff.

First up will be the KV II with some goodies! Went with the Lionroar PE set rather then the Voyager set due to the barrel requiring less work to make it fit. Also got some fenders coming in soon, not sure what company made them though but may be Aber.

The fruil tracks are super nice, although Im not 100% sure how to fix the metal wire in place and still keep the tracks in working order. I saw the plastic rod method in a thread earlier which makes a lot of sense, but is there any threads regarding assembling the fruils with the wire that is provided? The only Fruil tracks I have done were the old school one which had a jig and was clamped together, which was pretty neat!

I can't wait to make the tracks saggy! Nothing like the loose tracks on Russian vehicles!

I hope to get started on the kit in the near future, depending on the amount of work I need to do for Helo Miniatures in the next few days.

Hi Anders,

My first set of Friuls I just put a small dot of thick cyano on the end of the wire to hold it from falling out. Thats really all you need. :thumb:
