1st off, thanks for the interesting pix Panzer!

Second, those Mexican AFVs show that with a little ingenuity and TLC, one can extend the useful life of older, but still potent, AFVs. Same could be said for the tanx of the Lebanese. Neccessity is the mother of invention.

Which makes me wonder why our own National Guard forces couldn't have made due with M24s, M41s, M48s, M60s all these years. Save the big-bux tanx for the active army.

But then, that would have saved US taxpayers a bundle, and kept the govt and military tax-sucking monsters hungry. But it would still allow the PA ANG to defend its border from hordes of invading Ohioans or raging West Virginians.

The only problem with your theory is that the Army NG is federalized during time of national emergency, such as now with the war in Iraq. When this happens, they need to be integrated into the active force and be just as lethal. Using older, obsolete equipment when facing newer, more modern threat vehicles would not allow this to occur. Also, the time it would take to train the NG on new equipment once federalized would also be impractical. The basic need is to keep them on track with the Active component in both equipment and training.

True about the logic of similar eqmt - and the federalization... Pity that at one point in time in the past, the Federales subjugated the states into handing over their state guard units - in return for funds.
Much like they hold states hostage for highway funds with speed limit, DWI, seatbelt laws. Funny how we hear of "states rights" - but how quickly the states roll-over at the threat of federal dollars being yanked.
Oh well.
