Hello!

As I was asked by a friend to cover his Brummbär I though I would make a little instruction as I go along.

Here we go...the kit built up to this far.....

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/IMGP1056Medium.jpg

Here is what is needed:

Model...
Putty, the kind in a tube....
Something to spread the putty with (in my case some 0,5mm plastic card)
Tamiya zimmerit rakes.
Thin glue to spread on the model or putty and to use as a cleaner for the rake. (note the legos around the glue bottle, i find it holds the glue nicely and there is no fear of spills.;))

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/IMGP1057Medium.jpg

Spread the putty on the models surface, don't be neat, just get it on as fast as possible.

I use the rake in a knife handle as it holds it nicely and is more comfortable to hold.
Spread some glue on the edge to help it slide better.

Now if the putty you applied before on the model has dryed too much brush some glue on and it is soft again in seconds. Take the rake and start scraping.

And now all you got to do is cover all the needed areas....and you are ready. Nothing complicated but it takes a fair bit of time.

Great SBS Siim :thumb:

I was wondering how much time do you have to get the pattern done before the putty starts to dry

Thanks Dave.:)

Oh I think from the time of application about 2 min but I brush over it with some glue so that softens it for another 2 min.

Nice SBS Siim.

Have you ever tried with epoxy putty?

Ruben, thanks, and yes I have used epoxy putty. It works too but it needs a different method. It is better for complex patterns...(yeah i should have used that instead on my Elefant front).

Thanks Rick.

Speaking of legos.......

Jim, look up the thread just a bit there is a photo...he's using Tamiya putty and liquid cement as a thinner.

Jim, Rick is right. It is the regular Tamiya grey putty. It can be any putty as long as it can be thinned with the glue.;)

Very nice tutorial. Thanks a bunch. I hate doing zim and prefer the pre molded stuff but keep telling myself to save some money and give the old methods a try again. Just might now that I've seen how easy you make it seem.

Nice SBS Siim :thumb: :thumb: I find that Tamiya Putty dries too quick and a bit too flaky for my taste.

Gadzooks — a solution to the auto-emptying glue jar! Wunderbar!

I'm curious about the bizarre blade you use, too. I always just used a chunk from a saw blade. Is it that much better? I haven't done any German tanks for a whicle, but the time will come . . .

Oh!...I forgot to mention that I'm diluting the green putty with denatured alcohol to thin and using the Squadron green putty tube cap as the roller/applicator.

That's an interesting idea, too. Have you sliced the cap into a thinner ring or are you using it as is?

Also, I've been using xylene or liquid cement to thin Green Stuff, when I need to do so.

I usually use (blue) automotive spot body putty — I bought a one pound tube years ago for a couple of dollars, and I've barely made a dent in it. It uses aromatic hydrocarbons as a solvent — xylene or methyl ethyl ketone or toluene or something similar (I'll have to look).

Cheers

That is really cool Joseph and it seems to a method worth remembering.:thumb:

Yeah, basically it is the Tamiya Zimmerit tool (rake) and it is attached to a knife handle because I find it is better to handle that way.

I also use Tamiya putty and their zimm applicators. The results are very realistic. Befor applying the putty I sand the surfaces with sand paper. It was much more harder with Epoxie-sculpt - in this case AVF club zimm applicator works better.
