Hello,
I tried to search but couldn't find an answer to following:
what is the color inside stowage bin of 251? Color under floor plates is red brown primer, I guess. Does same apply to bins?
And as a matter of fact doesn't same coloring rule apply to for example Panther/PzIII/PzIV etc. stowage bins?

Thank you,

Niko

In all likelihood the colour inside would be primer red.

Hello,
I have to agree with James on his idea of what the bin color is. As long as you are talking about the interior of the bins located on the sides of the vehicle. As for the bins located behind the seats in the fighting compartment I would think they would be whatever color the rest of the visible interior might be. Here is a curve ball to throw at you guys. What color do you guys think that the interior of a green base painted 251 would be? I am leaning towards either dark yellow or maybe green. Any ideas or suggestions about this would be great to hear.

Can I ask if you have specific reference for such a vehicle. I wonder if this may be a bit of a fantasy paint job? ;)

Hello James.
No this isn't a fantasy paint scheme. The question I posed is based on a article written by Jentz and Doyle. In August 1944, an order was issued to the assembly firms to apply the camouflage pattern at the assembly plant using Dunklegelb RAL 7028 as the base coat with Olivgruen RAL 6003 and Rotbraun RAL 8017 applied in patches. This order created the uniform pattern which has become known as the “ambush” camouflage scheme. I am not positive who issued this order but for some reason I think it was Speer. I think this order accounts for why we see pictures of very dark vehicles that are to late to be gray. Of course there is always the red primer great debate to throw in there also. None the less there is documentation that shows olivegruen is a distinct possibilty on late war German vehicles. ;)

Hi,
after a while I continue this :)

There are quite a lot of pics that show outside lockers to have a light colored interior. I'll have to find those to show. Anyway, that's not an issue now as I'm building my current 251 with outside lockers closed.
As for the bins inside 251, that's a different story? Open topped bins as Olin mentioned would be, of course, colored with inside color like Dünkelgelb or such. How about bins under seats? I have built more or less succesfully those bins from Part's PE set and hinges are working. I'll open at least one of bins so coloring for that would be great to know.
I have Nuts and Bolts 251/9 but as pics are b/w and there is no clear shot of bins, I'm not sure about it.

Cheers,
Niko

I recently noticed the light tone of the colour on the inside of the side ext. bins. So I geuss I don't know for sure one way or the other. ;)

The pictures taken from the Ft. Knox vehicle currently under restauration show red primer.
