These are some pictures I took focusing mainly on the differences that make a A2 an A2. Any questions? Sound off! I'll do what i can to help you guys out.

Wow, it's taking photobucket a while to upload my pics. They are big so you can see all the detail.

Forgot something, the bottom pic is of the rear end of an M1A2. Compare this pic carefully to pics of an M1A1. Look at the left side. This is now larger on an A2 to allow for dirt to come out when the vee packs are cleaned by pulse jets of air. ;)

Great pics!
Pardon my ignorance but what is the extra rods on the .50 ?

Brian, only the A2 SEP's (System Enhancement Package) have the under armor APU. This being a straight A2, there is no under armor APU. To clear things up a bit, when the A2 was first introduced, there was only the A2. Once the SEP was bought and paid for, the straight A2 program was cancelled and now there are only A2 SEP's being made. It is entirely possible to see an A1, an A2 and a A2 SEP in the same picture. Clear as mud now? ;)

Gordy, the extra rods are the BFA ( No, JC, that's not what the 2LT's call me). Blank Firing Adapter. There to make sure nothing comes out of the barrel.

Howdy Jim,

Superb pics Sir! And many thx for 'em. I do have several questions, but I'll limit myself to just a couple.
First, where in the heck are these pics taken? Interesting mountain scenery.
And, your pics show the TC's hatch vision block ports in different colours (blue/purple/red/yellow). Is there a reason for this, or just a random thing, or am I just having a 'half-life' experience from drugs I took in the sixties?
Also....one more question (one I've been dying to ask). I see your IFF (?) panel has the vents pointing upside down. I've seen this at random times. Is there a reason for it? Or, is it just up to whoever the heck mounts it in the first place??

Many TIA,

Tread.

Tread, first, sorry it took so long to get back with you. The mountian scenery you speak is the BEAUTIFUL Rocky Mountians as seen from Ft. Carson, Co. I miss that post more and more every day.
As far as the vision blocks on the TC's hatch, the different colors are from a laser reflective coating on them. Depends on where you are looking at them from. They change colors as you move around. Does that explain it?
Last but not least, the "infamous" IFF panels. There is only one top and one bottom. There could possibly be different ones made a different but trust me. This IFF panel is in right side up. By the way, the only way to make this "work" is to pull it out and turn it around. One side has tan colored, heat absorbing tape, the other doesn't. You are looking at the non "working" side.

Does this work for you?
