Hi Mike,
The Marines used the M4A1 early in the war along with the M4A2 early, M4A2 mid and later in the war the M4A2 Late, M4A3 and even the M4 on Okinawa. So it would depend on where and when during WWII that you were refering to.

Dave:
I heard the Italeri M4 was a good "Marines" M4 is that true? As I am planning a diorama at Peliliu and I want the right vehicles for it.
Thanks

The Italeri kit is actually an M4A3 with some M4A2 parts thrown in, but you would still have to correct the back angle of the upper hull plate and scratch build or come up with a new lower hull rear plate.
If you are going to do a Marine tank from Peleliu, you would want an M4A2 Late production vehicle. The recent Academy kit is the right model if you change turrets and correct the upper rear hull plate angle (everyone except Tank Workshop seems to get that wrong). I based my Peleliu Sherman on the TW late production upper hull and the Tamiya M4A3 lower hull and running gear.
