Does anyone know if the Marines used any M32 ARV's during the Pacific War? Also, were they based on the M4A2? I ask because I seen a pic of an M32 in the Kagero book on the M3/M4 Tanks in Pacific Combat I can't tell if it's an M4 or M4A2 based version
I saw a picture of an elephant on the side hull and the caption says it's from the 3rd armored battalion It also has the name Almighty on it

Hi Chad
I have a build article here on the M32 that says that M32's were built on M4A1's,also M4,M4A2 and M4A3 welded hulls but does'nt say where they were used.

Hello Chad,

All of the Sherman based recovery vehicles that I have seen so far in use by the USMC in the Pacific are based on the M4A2 mid production hull. Pictures are scarce, I have been able to find about six photos so far. I will post them mid next week, We have temporarily lost our hi-speed connection until Wednesday.
On Iwo the Marines began using the M4A3 more than the M4A2, I have a couple of photos of ARV's on Iwo that I will post also, I never really looked closely at them to see if they might of been on the M4A3 hull. Possibly?

The USMC used VTRs based on both the M4A2 (diesel M32B2) and M4A3 (gasoline M32B3) chassis in order to maintain compatibility of vehicles within units.

Interestingly, some officers like Ed Bale reported that they supervised the conversion of gun tanks to VTRs for their units, with the left-over parts given to the unit as spares.
