Any chance to see these award winning masterpieces on PA?
Sam, could you re-link your vBench photos?

Hi Lawrence.
How did you even find that list?! ;)
It's a shame Chris Leeman doesn't dwell here, as his Stug III which didn't even place is fffffantastic. :thumb:
This is one of my entries, the DML Tiger 1 initial.

And that, dear Larry, is the problem with comps.

I agree with Hilly.
At most comps its a "Hands up who wants to judge?"affair, and you often get "Judges" who dont know the subject they are looking at, ie: sci-fi guys trying to asses an unfamiliar subject.
You also get people who dont build...and have never entered a model in a comp before...judgeing. There you have it.
An old friend once said to me"Who judges the judges?".
Regards to all.

Ray.
The vBenchs take a little while to set up mate. If you've requested one it will be on the way, you wont have been over looked. :)
I dont judge at comps, so I cant comment. But my understanding of the modified armour category at Expo this year was that there was less than one point between the top 6 models. Chris Leeman's Flat Panzer 1 took out the category by the way.
Stuke, I posted this Tiger up on Willys vBench last December......please keep up dude. ;)

Ok since you decided to air your thoughts in public Ray, I thought I would answer some of your comments.
As you know I am head judge at model expo. You seem to be under the misconception that people are judging categories where they have no experience.
I have now been head judge at this competition for 6 years and a model expo judge for 10 years. Alex Curlis (IPMS head judge of about 15 years) and I judged the modified Armour category. If that is not good enough for you, you are welcome to come along next year.
Overall, we had only 3 people who were first time judges this year, out of 30 people that is not bad. All of these people were directed to the OOB catagories being beginners. We have built up over the 6 years I have been in charge and great cadre of experienced guys to do the work at this comp. They all put in time and effort free and work very hard to make sure you get your results. Negative ill informed commenst just make it harder for people to get motivated to do this job.
People seem to forget that model expo is based on a technical judging system. Your knowledge and experience in a catagory are helpful (as a modeller), but the judges follow very strict guidelines as laid out in the judging sheets. The only point at which the judge is expected to make a non technical decision is in deciding upon the look of the models realism. In my experience as a judge at the various competitions I attend during the year (and yes I judge at them all) is that people who bring preconceptions to the table and their own references (ie they know because they know) make the worst judges in this type of system.
Considering where your models were entered this year mate your comments could be considered a little upsetting to several of the people you regularly interact with on a monthly basis and all of them are very experienced judges with many years of judging under their belts.
So saying all that the models in attendence at this years show were well and truely above the standard of say even 3 years ago. The winners in each category become harder and harder to judge each year. As Anthony indicated many of the categories came down to split point decisions for more than the place getters.
For those people wishing to enter model competitions I can only offer the following advice. Attend to the basics first. Make sure your build is correct (seams, gaps, sanding marks, glue marks and ejector pins), make sure your paint is done right (even coating, blemish and dust free in the actual paint and brush marks or splatter in the paint) and you can't go wrong. These are two of the largest areas where people let themselves down. 90% of the models I judge have problems in these areas.
So there is my rant, hope I haven't bored everyone to badly. Oh and yes I know I make all these silly mistakes in my own models, but then I build for pleasure not to win.

Model Expo Head Judge.

Mic.
Please re read my post.
At no time did i even mention Model Expo..I said : "At most comps its a "Hands up who wants to judge?"affair, and you often get "Judges" who dont know the subject they are looking at, ie: sci-fi guys trying to asses an unfamiliar subject.".
In fact in the post above I commented : "The Qaulity of entries was extremly high......" at Model Expo.
For some reason you have taken this as a personal attack. This was absolutly not my intention.
As for airing my thoughts in a public forum...to right I will ,its my right..as it is your right to respond.
We all make mistakes in our models....and your not the only one who builds for pleasure, its the only reason I enter.
I look forward to discussing this further at the next meeting.
Ray .
Since I urged Mic to reply, I thought it best to join and reply myself. To all the people who entered models in Model Expo 2006, I would just like to say, that the judging is not a haphazard affair carried out by inexperienced people. All categories are generally allocated to people with particular experience in those subjects. Mic and I judged the modified armour this year, and I can truly say it was a mammoth job. The quality of the models was outstanding, but the reality is in competitions of this type, there can be only one first place. If any competitor has any queries or difficulty agreeing with the results, the chief judge is always willing and available to discuss any grievances at the time. The judging gudelines are strighforward and user friendly. This comment is not about personal feelings, but about ensuring that the integrity of the judging system at possibly the best modelling show in Australia is not tarnished.

Alex.
Once again. It was NOT intended to "Tarnish" anything. At no time was Model Expo even mentioned. All I did was answer Hillys original statement "And that, dear Larry, is the problem with comps.".
And I did so by stating the problem was with most comps...if I failed to mention that did not apply to Model Expo, then I was remiss.
Frankly I find this "Pile on" mentality disturbing.
Looks like Tues night is shaping up to be a big one.
Ray.

I am sorry Ray that I have obviously misunderstood what you were saying, a regrettable and avoidable amount of angst has obviously been generated here. The main thrust of my post was to inform rather that cause anyone pain. Perhaps next time all of us should consider our words more carefully. If I have sullied your good name in anyway it was not my intention and I appologise.

Hi Mic,
Firstly my apologies for the tone of my response,it was in retrospect uncalled for.
I have never had anything but the highest regard for both you personaly and the job you undertake each year as Head Judge at Model Expo.
It is in no small part because of the role you play that the event has the prestige and success that it does.
Onward.
Sincerly,
Ray Blythe.

Well guys,
That's why I don't do comps. hehe Plus, I'm not in it to be famous, or win stuff. I just like to model, and talk about the history anyway. That's the fun part, and, being able to talk to all you dudes around the world. That's the best. :thumb:

I saw the Tilly and the Beaverette over on ML as well. They look very good. Have you got any more British subjects around, one of those Loyd Carriers for example?
