Hi,

Another project of mine. (I have way too many in progress. )
This time it's the Trumpeter KV-1. Mainly started it as a mind clearing and experimenting model. Although I have to admit it has stalled a bit at the moment.

On this ones turret I went a bit wild with the cast texture but it was fun and I am
really pleased with the result. :)

I also tried to do welds on the roof. They took a lot of effort and to me they qualify as OK.

And the tracks and wheels are in this state at the moment.

All comments welcome.

Man, you're not alone on having too many ;) Don't worry about it, but do try to finish, that would be better...getting stalled is...well, I don't know how to describe it as it's different for everybody...just relax or try and find some inspiration...there's a lot to be found on this site and others...

Looks great so far!

Looks good Siim i like the cast texture on the turret alot the welds look good also on the sides of the turret the welds on the top are a little heavy but i don't think it's nothing to worry about as far as everything else , i can't wait to see it finished thanks for sharing :)

Siim,
great job on the turret texture! Really bubbly and ruff like the Russian stuff was.
Not overdone at all. ;)

Very nice lightweight turret there, Siim
As I don't have the kit [yet] I'm anxious to hear what improvements you made on the turret exactly; you mention weldlines, which look very convincing, but did you alter the cast armour texture completely and if so, what techniques did you use? The result is a extremely realistic looking turret :)

Hi,

Thank you guys for the nice words. :)

To Larry: For short...this:

To Mikko: I used the glue-old toothbrush-sandpaper method.

To RC: My main inspiration for this one is the KV-1 Paul Abbott did here.

To Theo Braat: The turret had no texture, It was pretty smooth although I can't take much credit for the weld line on the side of the turret. It was done by Trumpeter but I did enhance it a bit. ;)

I do have a couple of very bad pictures from the beginning of the project.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/Picture3034Medium.jpg

Just the ordinary filling of the join line. Then I glued on the roof. I originally didn't want to bother with the welds but the roof looked like it was just sitting there unattached.

Unfortunately I didn't take any more pictures.

That line round the side of the turret isn't actually a weld, it's the remains of the mould line where the original turret came out of the mould., which has then been ground or flame cut away to make it less prominent. They appear on many large cast parts but they are emphatically not welds from joining two parts together. I appreciate that they may not always look very different but it's as well to avoid confusion. Good job on the welds you added to the roof by the way.

Disaster!

I started coating the KV with some gloss auto varnish. As I sprayed, some areas got a little too much of it. First it looked ok and it didn't turn white or anything, but as I returned to the model 5 minutes later the gloss had made the paint wrinkle on those heavy coated areas.

Of course I can hide the mess on the lower hull with some mud, but I think the turret roof will pose a problem. Oh well, live and learn...

Hi,

Things have advanced on this project but not that much.
I have given it a gloss coat with some suspicious spray can. Then I have applied a wash with model Master enamels. Mostly a mix of very dark brown. Then I added mud with a pastel-solvent mix. It will be covered by the matt varnish so that I can apply more different color mud without having to fear ''melting'' loose the older layer.

I can see from the photos now that the wash left some unwanted marks, so those have to be removed too.

Cool project! I realy like the mud, what pigments have you used?
Solventmarks are best taken care of while drying. The trick is keeping an eye on it while it dries, and as soon as you see a mark apearing work it whit a bit of fresh white spirit.;)

Thanks for the good word Jan.;)

Yes I did exactly what you said when appling the wash but I must have left the model on its own too early.
I used pastel chalks for the mud. They are some cheap brand but work ok.:) The colors were mostly brown, then a bit of green, red and yellow.

Hi,

It is finally done!:)

The dusty look was achieved with pastels. I made the base about a month ago. It was also dusted with pastels.

Nope, maybe in the future.

I am leaving of the cables. Although at first I made one broken piece of cable to be hanging of the rear attachment point, but as it turned out it would hang over the frame of the base.

I will not attach the light lens beacuse I want to show it as though the glass has fallen out during driving. I didn't loose it.:D

Oh and the roof hatch is so rusty because it is supposed to be a hatch from a burnt out KV used as a replacement.

Excellent build Siim!

I have to say I think that stowage or some type of gear strewn about her would really add to the character of the vehicle. Also the mud on the chassis and wheels is great, but I would add it to the nooks and crannies on the tracks as they would've passed through the same material.

I love the cast texture and color variation on the tank. Hard to make green look interesting!

John, yes I agree that the foam does not look so good, but since I had this dio around and thought I will use it.

Stuke, my next order from Plusmodel will contain some stuff for this baby.
