Hi,
Started this one last week while staing at my relatives place. From the start to this point it took me 6 hours. :)
Now most of the big assembly is done and the more detail work can commence.
EDIT: I deleted the picture, because I decided not to make that specific vehicle.
And where I am at now:

Can't wait to see it!
I can't really tell if that KOed kitty does or doesn't , but is there zimmerit on it?

Due to the placing of the tactical number and the german cross I believe this vehicle belongs to Schwere Panzer Abteilung 506.
They started out with most of the KT II zimmerited for the Arnhem campaign. However factory replacement vehicles would have been without zimmerit. Im not sure about vehicles from other units.
But it sure looks like the KT II in your picture has zimmerit. Perhaps another number would solve this?

Hi,
I really hoped it wasn't zimmerit. :( That wasn't planned with this one. Would anyone know a number of a tank in that Abteilung that didn't have zimmerit, thus a replacement vehicle?
Now a little update. The red lines mark places where I need to engrave a bit to add new weld lines with putty.
I also finished the DML Wittmann figure. I may or may not use it with this tank. Of course it will not reprecent him but some other well decorated commander!

That's it for now.

How about doing sPzAbt 507 late king tiger? As far as I know they didn't have zimmerit..

Hi,
I hope to update this thread with some pictures soon, but first I have a quick question.
Did the (very) late Tiger II's have a smooth gun mantlet or the type with a step in it? Looking at the pictures most of them have a smooth mantlet, but I don't have any reference books right now, so could someone with a little more material about it give me an answer?

Hi Siim,
I'll try to send you some scans of a late Tiger II, later. I think the late ones had the smooth mantlet.

Hi,
A update of what I have done to this kitty.
I used some putty on the front to fix some scratches I accidentally made and then used glue and a stiff brush to add some texture. The result was interesting, because the putty softened quicker then the plastic, so the texture came out kind of varied.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/Plit.jpg
I also redid all the welds with Tamiya epoxy putty. I also textured the kugelblende but I think I sanded it too much. A bit of touch up texturing for that. The gun mantlet also needs texture.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/tigerII3.jpg
I made all the handles out of wire because I think they look better this way and I strangely had fun doing those. I have to change some details on the turret roof and the rear hatch. The rear deck needs details added too. (The sides got some texture too and they look pink because the handle of the brush I use to apply the glue tinted the glue.)
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/tigerII4.jpg
I made the welds on the cupola from streched sprue. Still have to add the MG mount. the hatch is ready but currently in a small box with the rest of the stuff I have to add after painting.

Again special thanks to Larry for making this Tiger possible. ;)

Have you considered doing a tank from s.SS 503? I don't think they had zim, and were painted in cool camo! Add some tankers in leather jackets and it would look pretty bad ass!

Thanks for the comments guys. :)
I was thinking of doing a really late war one from s.Pz.Abt. 511. The green base with yellow patches. As I recall it is called the octopus scheme and it would look pretty funky.

Hi again,
This kitty has now got paint on.
I base coated it with Humbrol 105. It also served as a primer coat. Then I masked of the green with masking tape and airbrushed yellow. The yellow is Humbrol 81. The color on the lid looks horrible, but when airbrushing it, it turned out to be a very good looking color.:)
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/minutigerII2Medium.jpg
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/minutigerII3Medium.jpg
The scratches on the front are done on purpose, as I want to make it look, like it has driven into some vehicle in ordet to push it out of its way.
(I can't really explain it that clearly. Imagine a tiger II driving down a narrow road and then a T-34 is knocked out on hte side of the road. The road is too narrow for the Tiger to pass without driving into the ditch so it has to push the destroyed tank out of its way.)

The wheels are also painted green and are in a box on my workbench.
The tracks still need painting.:)
All comments and suggestion are welcome.

About the circles.....nope, I don't think I will make them. If they would come out sloppy the project would be ruined. (Of course if I don't do it before in some other way.:o )

The mantlet is not indicative of production period - some had the step machined to reduce weight so that it was consistent with other mantlet castings (I assume so that the gun elevation was not overstressed). It is therefore something which appears on a random basis during production.

Thats why it confused me a lot. I actually made a decision based on a photo I saw. It was supposed to be made right after the war and it had late turrets on stands for caliration or something, they all had flush mantlets.
I appreciate the info you gave.:) :thumb:

Hi again,
I just finished appling Humbrol Gloss to this model and a few others.
Before doing that I realised that I had forgotten to add the loops on the turret sides. So I scraped of paint on spots where the loops are supposed to go. I made them from thin brass wire.
(Sorry about the greenish photo.:o )
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/IMGP0804Medium.jpg
I repeated the same on the other side.
I will try to take pictures of the whole model tomorrow in natural light.

This baby got some gloss too.
It really made the colors better looking, at least to my eyes. The slightly bad coverage of paint on the camo loops are no big deal, they will be given a worn metallic look.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/IMGP0876Medium.jpg
I also added the MG rod to the commanders cupola. The last batch of Tiger II's had this feature instead of the usual MG ring.

The figures I will add, is a commander:
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/IMGP0873Medium.jpg
The gloss does not do justice to it.:( Some of you might recognise this figure as a severy mutilated DML Michael Wittmann, but the fig will be reperesenting some other highly awarded officer.:D
Also I will ad a walking soldier near the tank in order to show better the huge size of the tank.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/IMGP0874Medium.jpg
I reming you that the figures are just base painted and glossed, now comes the really tricky bit of making them look real.

A little update. I gave it a was but I couldnt get the right color to the wash. At first I tried browner shades but they turned pinkish and when adding more black it turned kind of purple. It stil looks a bit purple but not as much as the photos show.

For the dusting I used Model Master Wood Flat. I mixed it about 20% paint 80% thinner. For the wash a mixture of black and brown, but mid way through the process I added some rust to the mix.

Yes I agree the exhausts look a bit bright, it is partially due to the photo but I will tone them down.
About the worn paint. Do you mean like some graphite powder on places the crew touches the most? Or a little drybrush with light green?
I kind of like how it is now.:D

Really nice work Siim. You've paid a lot of attention to this build.
One thing I've noticed on our vBench posting's around here is a lot of "good job's", "incredible work", etc. I know personally that I could use more constructive comments to help make my modelling better (ok ok if I ever build anything again).
I want to make an effort to try and use this thought process in others postings in a hope that it will spur others to do it to my work.
So in this vein, I agree that the exhausts need to be toned down. Or maybe not toned down so much as just a little more color variation..some dark rust combined with lighter rust. I would add the same comment to the tracks on the turret sides. Also the tow hooks holding the tow cables I believe would show more wear a la some graphite powders.
Some very strong features of the kit I think are the tracks. Love the built up mud. The rain streaks and dusting in general on the finish. And finally just the hard edge camo. Something I can never seem to get the guts to do.
Very nice work Siim!

The spare tracks got some pastels too. They look a bit darker. (The subtle color variation does not really show that much in the photo.)
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/gkmgdhnh.jpg
I want the barrel to be cleaner so that it would give some contrast to the tank. I remember seeing a picture of a KT with one of its crew members sitting on the barrel end. In my thinking he climbed up the barrel and in the process removing dust from it. I applied the same ''story'' here.
