Hi,

Since a lot of guys here have started these kind of threads in their vbenches, I thought I will do the same. :)

So here goes

Got this last week:
Sorry for super blurry pictures. Did these in a hurry.

I think it will be my next project. But have to finish the stuff I have on the bench now.

And also this little beauty:

Hi Siim,

Do you have a vehicle planned for the KT yet?

Hey Larry,

I want to do this one shown here: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php...highlight=tiger (http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=73056&highlight=tiger)
But when it was still in action. Sadly haven found any other pictures of this vehicle.
It is so hard to find good (if any) pictures of Tiger II with late pattern tracks. :(

Oh.. I just realised this is the same tank as in the boxart.

Would it have the same camo when it was abandoned?
It is really odd how the paint has chiped from the hull in such a big area.

Hi Siim,

If I remember these pics (yes there's another of this vehicle) came from a US vets site - http://www.11tharmoreddivision.com/photos/index.htm

You might want to think what else would cause those bare patches ;)

Hi,

Got this set of figures yesterday. Mainly because they were cheap.

I can not comment yet on how well they fit together but the the first thing I noticed though was, that every helmet has a big dent right on top.

Hi,

To Evan: It seems to be the old StuG with one sprue to make it into the 10.5 cm model and also a PE fret with a separate little instruction sheet.

I will start this kit as soon as I get the crew and maybe some PE for it from Eduard. It does not really need that extra PE but what the hell.

Welcome back. :) Those should keep you out of trouble for a little while

What are the prices in Russia like?

Lawrence

Panzergrenadier
08-22-2006, 04:05 AM
The prices in Russia vary. Tamiya is as expensive as elsewhere, Dragon is sometimes cheaper. Trumpeter and Academy was cheap. Zvezda was even cheaper and the other Russian companies even more so.

I bought the kits in the previous post for 65$
For example I bought the Modelist T-34 for 5$ and Zvezda Pz III for 15$
I will try to make some pictures of the sprues, because then it is visible, where that cheap price comes from.

When I look back at the trip I'm glad that I didn't exchange more money, because I would have went even more crazy with the buying.

Hi Siim
Nice lot of different things you've bougth, I just have a question the PZIII E is that a remodelled version from their own F model, or is it the old Dragon III E now retrofitted as a Befehls III E please enlight us..

Panzergrenadier
08-23-2006, 04:59 AM
Hi,

I don't know exactly, but in the kit there are two types of drive wheel and idler wheel (earlyer and later). Also two types of front armor plate with two types of drivers vision slit, also a Stug front plate. In the box there is a 37mm gun on one sprue and a 50mm on another.
So it looks like their F with parts to make different variants.

Hi again,

I will add some pictures of what's in the box.

Panzer III box contents:
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/97777.jpg

Nicely moulded lower hull.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/99999.jpg

Some soft detail and a bit misformed parts.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/94444.jpg

Heavy cast texture on the turret. This will definitely need sanding down.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g210/Panzergrenadier90/96666.jpg

The one piece tracks are horrible. How am I supposed to clean up the pin marks? These will be replaced anyway.

A few pictures about the T-34.

Nicely done cast texture.

The tracks are quite good. Just need usual clean up.

My friend agreed to lend me his camera but he was too tired to come to my place. So we agreed to meet up half way and that happens to be near the crocodile. Its back was a nice place to put on the boxes. Another reason was the nice light outside. ;)

Larry,

The sculptures are in a park near a castle like manor built in 1886 by Nicolai von Glehn. They were built around the same time but restored sometime in the 1980s.

The manor looks like this:
http://www.menu.ee/pildid/glehni_loss.jpg

Oh, By the way. "Tigers are better than Panthers?"

My favourite panzer changes over time. Some weeks it is a Panther, other times a Tiger or a Panzer III. I guess right now I have worked full on on my Tiger II, that I need a breack from sloping armor.
When I get my Panther G smary, then it will change again. ;)

Hi,

After searching for Panzer III pictures on the net I came to a conclusion, that I want to build a late Pz III F with a 50 mm KwK 38 L/42.
I read that they were rearmed, so does this mean, that they were returned to the factory for some time? If so would they get the new style drive sprocket, idler and a cupola? I also read that some had a turret mounted stowage box. Does there exist any pictures of that modification?

A lot of questions but maybe someone can help. :)

Achtung Panzer has a walkaround of a reworked Pz III ausf F with the 5cm gun, H sprocket, E-G idler, added ventilator on turret roof (in addition to the two existing signal ports), E cupola and turret basket.

Will those 36cm tracks work on the drive sprockets for your Pz III kit? From what I saw, it looks like the sprockets are for 40cm tracks...I have the III F and 36cm tracks don't work on that one :( (unless you have the original DML sprockets?) ...do you plan on getting replacement FM drive sprockets :-/

I tried a few links on the sprocket and they seemed to kind of fit, I didn't clean the sprocket of the flash so I am not shure 100% that they will sit nicely.

On the other hand if they don't sit well then I can use them on DMLs Pz IV E. :)

RC, it was just like you said, the CMK item is really detailed and looks super.

About the FW, yes it is an all Eduard kit. I don't get tired of saying how good it looks. The colored PE is really detailed and far beyond what I would be able to paint. The sprue attachment points are really small too so lesser risk of damaging the part. And it comes with a complete engine. The masks are really useful when it will come to painting it.

I don't usually buy a kit because I like the boxart, but with this kit, the boxart is THE greatest I have seen. No offence to those here on this site who paint boxarts, but there just are some pictures that appeal to me more than others.

I was between getting the jaboschreck version or the 20mm, but the LHS had 2 of the 20mm guns so I picked one up. I think I am going to but it behind a Sd.kfz 250.

I haven't found any reviews of these on the net....not even box top pictures. Are you out there interested in sprue pictures?

Nice pick-up. Just wondering how it much costs on your end. They are selling them for about US$36 in HK and it's more expensive than the Sturer Emil. The Sturer Emil was released at US$9 here and that's a big jump from $9 to $36. Did Trumpeter increase their prices?

Lawrence,

The Sturer Emil cost here at around 18$

The Munitionsschlepper PzKpfw IV Ausf. D/E cost here 60$. So there is a rise in price on myend too.
The Mörser Karl-Gerät 040/041 arrived at the LHS to, it was priced at 81$.

Well now I can say that the kit barrel is really nice. The muzzle brake is a multi-part assembly so it looks really nice. The PE in the kit is OK, quite nice in fact but still some minor issues. The tracks are good but the small knock out marks are a pain as they are in places on the links where you just can't get to them. It looks ok under the suspension but watch out when using them as spare links.

Oh my! Eight of them, you say, right at the counter! - Yes, I can see how that was a difficult situation for you. Glad to see you made the best of it! :D

Rick, best would have been if I had gotten one of the Pz 38s on top of the Marder pile!:D

Fletcher, it is not really one of my top favorite vehicles. I wanted it because Tristar has done a very good job on it and it is one of those ''must have for the future'' type of kits.;)

Ok, now I have a soldering set-up. I was going to delay getting it, but since I didn't have to pay for it....:D

I got a fairly cheap soldering station with a regulator. Also a light with a magnifying glass.

Now...you might say ''oh I bet you are having fun''...NO, I spent 3 hours trying with pieces of brass and only managed to get ONE bond that was worth mentioning, in fact it was one of a very few that even stayed together. As you can imagine frustration level is high right now.:yell:

I am using 1mm cored solder and the tip that is relatively blunt.

Siim

lquah
07-19-2007, 02:25 PM
Siim

You need to make sure that the tip is kept clean at all times. Keep a wet sponge closeby and when the tip starts getting dirty, just wipe the tip on the sponge.

Are you using flux/soldering paste? Make sure both parts to be joined have been prepared with the flux/soldering paste before applying the solder.

LQ

tamigawa
07-19-2007, 03:23 PM
yep, flux is essential. You can get away without it in electronics soldering, but with models, nothing doing. Also, I've found that rosin-cored solder is not the best for models. I've had better luck with solid core lead ,6mm

Keep going, it is kinda a mystery at first but then there is a "eureka" moment and everything works. :)

Siim, I tell you a story about a guitar player and the next thing I know you're all over a new soldering set-up......where's the logic in that? :D

Sounds like a winner, I'm glad that you went for it (oh yea, that was the point of the guitar story!). You'll get the soldering thing...LQ and Fletch are right on the mechanics......and like Fletcher said.. you'll just have one of those "I get it" moments. :)

Also, unlike me, you seem to be practicing on scrap PE, I think that's the smart way to go.;) ...not me however...no way...I just tear into an overwhelming kit and do the trial & error thing! :p

Looking forward to seeing your work on the Pz IV turrent bin!

Siim,

Don't worry, we'll all learn ya. :thumb: When I started the panther I could barely solder.

Very important stuff,

#1 ALWAYS USE FLUX!!!!!!!! on both pieces.

#2 KEEP THE TIP CLEAN!!!!!! (No, on the soldering iron!!! ) a dirty tip will interfere with heat transfer from the iron to the brass.

#3 ALWAYS USE ENOUGH HEAT!!!!!!!

#4 When soldering multiple joints on the same piece, you must use heat sinks.

#5 When you heat a piece of brass, the heat will travel throught out the entire object untill it has nowhere else to go. Then it will get hotter.

Everyone feel free to make additions.

Laz

Now, go ahead and ask all the questions you want. :thumb:

Thank you LQ, Fletcher, Rick and Laz.:)

Right now I have a very thin flux, I think I will need to get some paste to help to keep it on the pieces and not on the work base.

Maybe some of my problems come from the advice I got here a home. I was told to rub the tip with sandpaper if it was dirty...''it would clean it right up''. The tip seems to be deteriorating.

Ok...back to practicing!:)

lquah

Siim

Another thing I found out when soldering the turret bin. You need to have higher temperature if you are soldering a large piece. This is because metal conducts heat well and will dissipate the heat faster the larger the PE piece is.

Also remember to anneal the PE pieces to make it easier to bend and shape.

Don't worry, you will become an experten real soon! :)

Well, this advice is ok, I sometimes use a file to clean my tip, and it does make it wear down, but most tips are replaceable. The thing is you need a way to clean it when it is real hot.

Looking at that key holder I have to suppose you went to Hannant's... isn't it?
The Jagdpanther is a nice kit, I built it one year ago, nice choice!

Panzergrenadier

:D Actually I didn't go to Hannats, I simply couldn't find it. I forgot to print out the google satellite picture and so I only had with me some directions found on ML. It said there that it would be right outside the station, but it was not, only a huge construction site. I walked around a little there but couldn't find it and so we went to the RAF museum. The museum was great BTW. I could have went back another day, but it was too long of a ride back there. (I stayed in the opposite end of the city, in the beginning of the Northern line.)

I did find Modelzone, I nearly lost my mind there, so much stuff!!! Floyds was equally overwhelming. The other bookshops were great too.

james84
07-27-2007, 10:50 AM
Actually I must say that reading the directions on Hannant's site it's not very clear... they say they are close to the museum but... even Google Earth doesn't show it!
Modelzone and Floyds (not to be confused with "Floods", like the ones the British are experiencing in these days)... I'll note that for my next trip to London!

Also note Motorbooks, it is really close to Leicester Square station and was Packed full of all kinds of military books. I got there just around closing time so I managed to get it, start drooling and then they started closing up.:D

The shop is in two sections separated by some other shop. One part is train, car etc, the other strictly military.

I didn't take any photos because the museum stuff is allready online in Tanxsheaven etc.

Erik, I sure hope so.:D I have looked more at the Modern Tanks book and I find it interesting. Good coverage, nice text, and all is uniform.

The U-boat book I have read just 20 pages, but it is really good, the memories and evennts are quite vivid.

Hey Siim,

I've got the Tamiya 3,7cm Halftrack too, it's a nice kit, but I would strongly suggest picking up some aftermarket photo etch for it. The Eduard set is nice. You can look at my vBench to see the photos that I've put up of it.

I'm probably going to end up buying an aftermarket barrel and other parts for it cause the front wheel assembly provided by Tamiya is HORRRIBLE..
