i got the idea for a mk3j in a recovery area from the photo below that I found in the Concord Publication, The Panzerkampfwagen 3 at War.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/concordbook.jpg
This shot has the tank with a long barrel but I wanted to model the earlier version with the 5cm L/42.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/mk3.jpg
I also wanted the earlier style engine deck .
The two kits used were a Tamiya Mk3L and a Dragon Mk3 Stug f. I 'borrowed' the rear deck from the stug kit which I thebn ahd to marry onto the Tamiya one. This fit then required a reshaping with modeling clay and putty on the rear end to backdate to match the engine deck.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/045.jpg
I then added aber brass and took the guards off as in the photo. I also drilled out the brake cooling air intake vent as I removed the cover as in the photo.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/Test2044.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/Test2040.jpg
I also used Kasten final drive housings [brown in photo]top plate is only sitting on chassis.
I then added some scratch stuff like the scalloping under the guards and interior stuff that wasn't Aber but needed to be there to fill in when you looked through the open hatch.

PART 2
Added Finemolds periscopes
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/IMG_0885.jpg
Some Aber lovin'....... more rework needed on the side rear finish!
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/Test3005.jpg
Nearly ready for paint.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/IMG_1898.jpg
I then went about creating the ground work and tracklink positioning etc and positioned the tank on the base to test fit. At this point everything has been glued down except the tank itself . Also the figure and some of the accessories.I am using the photo in the first post as a rough guide but would still like to catch the feel of the photo.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/Test2038.jpg
The brakes are not the right shape but the large washes are only working as shape fillers to hold the tranny. They will be hidden once the top is on and sealed.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/Test2043.jpg
Front sproket ring is going to be off .....pretty much because I got some spares from the Kasten set.
Does anyone have any references on what the drive wheel looks like on a mark 3 with the sproket ring detached?

This stage is pretty much just the undercoat gray, ground work snowed up 75%, and figure base coated. The figure is a Hornet and was perfect for what I wanted. I decided to go with a lone sentry guarding the recovered tank in a holding area somewhere near Stalingrad.

I weathered the interior ,fixed the back deck join and secured the upper hull.

Winter Cam stage.
Wow, was xmas busy....... now thats over and done with , paint, the bit I like best!
The tank got a light white coat over maskol chips, then a more intense coat in patch's. Then some hand chipping and some nice half frozen mud from Mother Russia.

The Dirt Bit...........
this tank is being modelled as a half wreck in a recovery area so I have gone hardcore on the weathering. The side mud guards have been removed by the recovery crew but I am still not sure weather to add them to the scene as I do not want to crowd it out.

THE BASE, and the other bits that I am still working on.
The snowy ground is going to get more work but it's a real tight rope walk in trying to keep a detailed look without a 'white out'. I like doing the ground work as much as the model and treat the base as a model in itself.
The jib crane at the rear still needs more work and I will have to secure the tank soon for the final snow effect. I also have a shot up Tiger 1 wheel to paint, some boxes and a bunch of tree branches to fix in a pile behind the sentry. The sentry has to be done and after that it should be finished.

Nice wun Hilly.
I always like the way your models tie into their surroundings, they never look "placed on".
But wheres the little bit of humour you normally place in your dio's? I've looked....but cant see.
I still laugh about that German Soldier pissing on the photo of Adolf in an older dio. :)
Happy New Year,
Bill.

 We'll i finally finished this one..........2 years in the making, off and on.
Because there are so many pages I will add a few earlier shots with the late ones as a compare. Image first up is a line art which I fiddled with in photoshop. HANG ON CAUSE THERE ARE HEAPS OF IMAGES!
..........................http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/mk3-1.jpg
I finished off the figure in artist oils and added a Gunze flat coat. I then added the rest of the eyeball detail after the flat coat to give the eyes a bit of lift...doesn't really show in the photo's.
...............http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/Picture016.jpg.....................http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/3dbattleart/mk3j/IMG_3969.jpg

What a difference flat coat makes.

I ADDED MORE SNOW AND SOFTENED THE WINTERCAM. I ALSO ADDED LEFT OVER FALLEN SNOW TO CERTAIN PARTS OF THE TANL AND FROSTED THE TOPS OF ALL THE PIECES AROUND THE TANK THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR A WHILE. THIS SCENE AS I SEE IT DEPICTS A SENTRY GUARDING A TANK IN A REPAIR FACILITY NEAR STALINGRAD. The maintenance crew have gone for lunch and the guard is not happy about being at the Russian Front.

Hi Hilly,
That one looks just great! Thanks for showing all the steps as this gives me a lot of inspiration. Also for finishing the Pershing. Too late a vehicle for a winter scene though, so I'll store this one in me 'ideas department' for say, a M16 MGMC ... fully operational!!!
